Chapter 21

1 And it came1096 to pass, that after5613 we were gotten645 from them, and had launched,321 we came2064 with a straight2113 course2113 to Coos,2972 and the day following1836 to Rhodes,4499 and from there1564 to Patara:3959

2 And finding2147 a ship4143 sailing1276 over1276 to Phenicia,5403 we went1910 aboard,1910 and set321 forth.321

3 Now1161 when we had discovered398 Cyprus,2954 we left2641 it on the left2176 hand, and sailed4126 into1519 Syria,4947 and landed2609 at1519 Tyre:5184 for there1566 the ship4143 was to unlade670 her burden.1117

4 And finding429 disciples,3101 we tarried1961 there847 seven2033 days:2250 who3748 said3004 to Paul3972 through1223 the Spirit,4151 that he should not go305 up to Jerusalem.2419

5 And when3753 we had accomplished1822 those3588 days,2250 we departed1831 and went4198 our way;4311 and they all3956 brought4311 us on1909 our way,4311 with wives1135 and children,5043 till2193 we were out of the city:4172 and we kneeled5087 1119 down on1909 the shore,123 and prayed.4336

6 And when we had taken782 our leave782 one240 of another,240 we took1910 1519 ship;4143 and they returned5290 home2398 again.5290

7 And when we had finished1274 our course4144 from Tyre,5184 we came2658 to Ptolemais,4424 and saluted782 the brothers,80 and stayed3306 with them one3391 day.2250

8 And the next1887 day we that were of Paul's3972 company4012 departed,1831 and came2064 to Caesarea:2542 and we entered1525 into1519 the house3624 of Philip5376 the evangelist,2099 which was one of the seven;2033 and stayed3306 with him.

9 And the same5129 man had1510 four5064 daughters,2364 virgins,3933 which did prophesy.4395

10 And as we tarried1961 there many4119 days,2250 there came2718 down2718 from Judaea2449 a certain5100 prophet,4396 named3686 Agabus.13

11 And when he was come2064 to us, he took142 Paul's3972 girdle,2223 and bound1210 his own848 hands5495 and feet,4228 and said,2036 Thus3592 said3004 the Holy40 Ghost,4151 So3779 shall the Jews2453 at1722 Jerusalem2419 bind1210 the man435 that ownes2076 this3778 girdle,2223 and shall deliver3860 him into1519 the hands5495 of the Gentiles.1484

12 And when5613 we heard191 these5023 things, both5037 we, and they of that place,1786 sought3870 him not to go305 up to Jerusalem.2419

13 Then1161 Paul3972 answered,611 What5101 mean4160 you to weep2799 and to break4919 my3450 heart?2588 for I am ready2093 not to be bound1210 only,3440 but also2532 to die599 at1519 Jerusalem2419 for the name3686 of the Lord2962 Jesus.2424

14 And when he would not be persuaded,3982 we ceased,2270 saying,2036 The will2307 of the Lord2962 be done.1096

15 And after3326 those5025 days2250 we took643 up our carriages,643 and went305 up to Jerusalem.2419

16 There went4905 with us also2532 certain of the disciples3101 of Caesarea,2542 and brought71 with them one5100 Mnason3416 of Cyprus,2954 an old744 disciple,3101 with whom3739 we should lodge.3579

17 And when we were come1096 to Jerusalem,2414 the brothers80 received1209 us gladly.780

18 And the day following1966 Paul3972 went1524 in with us to James;2385 and all3956 the elders4245 were present.3854

19 And when he had saluted782 them, he declared1834 particularly1520 what3739 things God2316 had worked4160 among1722 the Gentiles1484 by his ministry.1248

20 And when they heard191 it, they glorified1392 the Lord,2962 and said2036 to him, You see,2334 brother,80 how4214 many4214 thousands3461 of Jews2453 there are which3588 believe;4100 and they are all3956 zealous2207 of the law:3551

21 And they are informed2727 of you, that you teach1321 all3956 the Jews2453 which are among2596 the Gentiles1484 to forsake646 575 Moses,3475 saying3004 that they ought not to circumcise4059 their children,5043 neither3366 to walk4043 after the customs.1485

22 What5101 is it therefore?3767 the multitude4128 must1163 needs3843 come4905 together:4905 for they will hear191 that you are come.2064

23 Do4160 therefore3767 this5124 that we say3004 to you: We have1526 four5064 men435 which have2192 a vow2171 on1909 them;

24 Them take,3880 and purify48 yourself with them, and be at1159 charges1159 with them, that they may shave3587 their heads:2776 and all3956 may know1097 that those things, whereof they were informed2727 concerning4012 you, are nothing;3762 but that you yourself846 also2532 walk4748 orderly,4748 and keep5442 the law.3551

25 As touching4012 the Gentiles1484 which believe,4100 we have2192 written1989 and concluded2919 that they observe5083 no3367 such5108 thing, save1508 only that they keep5442 themselves from things offered1494 to idols,1494 and from blood,129 and from strangled,4156 and from fornication.4202

26 Then5119 Paul3972 took3880 the men,435 and the next2192 day2250 purifying48 himself with them entered1524 into1519 the temple,2411 to signify1229 the accomplishment1604 of the days2250 of purification,49 until2193 that an offering4376 should be offered4374 for every1538 one1520 of them.

27 And when5613 the seven2033 days2250 were almost3195 ended,4931 the Jews2453 which were of Asia,773 when they saw2300 him in the temple,2411 stirred4797 up all3956 the people,3793 and laid1911 hands5495 on1909 him,

28 Crying2896 out, Men435 of Israel,2475 help:997 This3778 is the man,444 that teaches1321 all3956 men every3837 where3837 against2596 the people,2992 and the law,3551 and this5126 place:5117 and further2089 brought1521 Greeks1672 also2532 into1519 the temple,2411 and has polluted2840 this5127 holy40 place.5117

29 (For they had seen4308 before4308 with him in the city4172 Trophimus5161 an Ephesian,2180 whom3739 they supposed3543 that Paul3972 had brought1521 into1519 the temple.2411)

30 And all3650 the city4172 was moved,2795 and the people2992 ran4890 together:4890 and they took1949 Paul,3972 and drew1670 him out of the temple:2411 and immediately2112 the doors2374 were shut.2808

31 And as they went2212 about2212 to kill615 him, tidings5334 came305 to the chief5506 captain5506 of the band,4686 that all3650 Jerusalem2419 was in an uproar.4797

32 Who3739 immediately1824 took3880 soldiers4757 and centurions,1543 and ran2701 down2701 to them: and when they saw1492 the chief5506 captain5506 and the soldiers,4757 they left3973 beating5180 of Paul.3972

33 Then5119 the chief5506 captain5506 came1448 near,1448 and took1949 him, and commanded2753 him to be bound1210 with two1417 chains;254 and demanded4441 who5101 he was, and what5101 he had done.4160

34 And some243 cried994 one thing, some243 another,243 among1722 the multitude:3793 and when he could1410 not know1097 the certainty804 for the tumult,2351 he commanded2753 him to be carried71 into1519 the castle.3925

35 And when3753 he came1096 on the stairs,304 so4819 it was, that he was borne941 of the soldiers4757 for the violence970 of the people.3793

36 For the multitude4128 of the people2992 followed190 after, crying,2896 Away142 with him.

37 And as Paul3972 was to be led1521 into1519 the castle,3925 he said3004 to the chief5506 captain,5506 May1832 I speak2036 to you? Who3588 said,5346 Can1097 you speak1097 Greek?1676

38 Are1488 not you that Egyptian,124 which before4253 these5130 days2250 made387 an uproar,387 and led1806 out into1519 the wilderness2048 four5070 thousand5070 men435 that were murderers?4607

39 But Paul3972 said,2036 I am1510 a man444 which am a Jew2453 of Tarsus,5018 a city4172 in Cilicia,2791 a citizen4177 of no3756 mean767 city:4172 and, I beseech1189 you, suffer2010 me to speak2980 to the people.2992

40 And when he had given him license,2010 Paul3972 stood2476 on1909 the stairs,304 and beckoned2678 with the hand5495 to the people.2992 And when there was made1096 a great4183 silence,4602 he spoke4377 to them in the Hebrew1446 tongue,1258 saying,3004

Chapter 21

1 AND it came to pass, after we separated from them, we sailed a straight course to the Island of Co'os, and the following day we arrived at Rhodes, and from thence to Pat'a-ra:

2 And we found there a ship sailing to Pheni'cia, and we went on board, and set forth.

3 Then we reached the Island of Cyprus, and passed it on the left hand, and sailed to for there the ship was to unload her cargo.

4 And because we found disciples there, we stayed with them seven days: and every day they said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

5 After these days, we departed on our journey, and they all escorted us on our way with their wives and children, till we were out of the city: then they knelt down by the seaside and prayed;

6 And when we had kissed one another good-bye, we took ship; and they returned to their homes.

7 We sailed from Tyre and arrived at the city of Ak-ka (Ptol-e-ma'is), and we saluted the brethren who were there, and tarried with them a day.

8 On the next day we departed and came to Cµs-a-re'a: and we went in and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven.

9 He had four daughters, virgins, who prophesied.

10 And as we were there many days, there came down from Judµa a prophet named Ag'a-bus.

11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own feet and hands, and said, Thus says the Holy Spirit, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owns this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

12 And when we had heard these words, both we and the natives of the place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem.

13 Then Paul answered and said, Why do you weep and break my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem, for the sake of the name of our LORD Jesus Christ.

14 And when he would not listen to us, we ceased, saying, Let the will of our LORD be done.

15 After those days, we made our preparations and went up to Jerusalem.

16 And there came with us some of the disciples from Cµs-a-re'a, bringing with them a brother who was among the first converts, named Mna'son, a native of Cyprus, who had before received us at his house.

17 When we arrived at Jerusalem, the brethren welcomed us gladly.

18 And the next day when all the elders were present we went in with Paul unto James.

19 And when we had saluted them, Paul told them in successive order everything that God had done among the Gentiles by his ministry.

20 And when they heard it, they glorified God, and said to Paul, Our brother, see how many thousands there are in Judµa who are believers; and they are all zealous of the law;

21 But they have been en_lbp_informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake the law of Moses, stating that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to follow after the customs of the law.

22 Now, therefore, they have heard that you have come here.

23 Do, therefore, what we tell you: We have four men who have vowed to purify themselves;

24 Take them and go purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses so that they may shave their heads: then every one will know that what has been said against you is false, and that you yourself have fulfilled the law and obey it.

25 As for the believers amongst the Gentiles, we have written that they should abstain from the things sacrificed to idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood.

26 Then Paul took the men and on the next day he was purified with them and then he entered into the temple, en_lbp_informing them how to complete the days of purification, until the gift of every one of them was offered.

27 And when the seventh day approached, and the Jews from Asia Minor saw him in the temple, they stirred up all the people against him and laid hands on him,

28 And cried out, saying, Men of Israel, help: This is the man who teaches everywhere against our people, against the law, and against this place; and further, he has brought Syr-i-ans into the temple, and has defiled this holy place.

29 For they had previously seen Troph'imus, the E-phe'sian, with him in the city, and they thought he had entered into the temple with Paul.

30 So the whole city was in a tumult, and all the people ran together; they seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple; and the doors were immediately shut.

31 And as the mob sought to kill him, the news reached the captain of the company, that all the city was in an uproar.

32 He immediately took a centurion and many soldiers, and ran down to them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they ceased beating Paul.

33 Then the chief captain came near him and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains. Then he inquired, Who is he and what has he done?

34 And some of the mob cried against him one thing, some another: and because of their confusion he was unable to know what was true, so he commanded him to be taken to headquarters.

35 And when Paul reached the stairs, the soldiers bore him because of the violence of the people.

36 For a great many people followed after, crying, and saying, Away with him.

37 And as Paul was about to be led into headquarters, he said to the chief captain, May I speak to you? The captain said, Can you speak Greek?

38 Are you not that Egyptian who some time ago created disturbances and led out into the desert four thousand malefactors?

39 But Paul said, I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cili'cia, a citizen of a well-known city: I beg you, permit me to speak to the people.

40 And when he had given him permission, Paul stood on the stairs and beckoned with his hand to them. And when they were quiet, he spoke to them in the Hebrew (Aramaic) tongue and said to them.
