Chapter 2

1 AND it happened in those days that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, to take a census of all the people in his empire.

2 This first census took place during the governorship of Quirinius in Syria.

3 And every man went to be registered in his own city.

4 Joseph also went up from Nazareth, a city of Galilee, to Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; because he was of the house and family of David;

5 With his acquired wife Mary, while she was with child, that they might be registered there.

6 And it came to pass while they were there, that her days of deliverance were to be fulfilled.

7 And she gave birth to her first-born son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because they had no place where they were lodging.

8 Now there were shepherds in that region, where they were staying, and they were watching their flocks at night.

9 And behold, the angel of God came to them, and the glory of the Lord shone on them; and they were seized with a great fear.

10 And the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you glad tidings of great joy, which will be to all the world.

11 For today is born to you in the city of David, a Saviour, who is the Lord Christ.

12 And this is a sign for you; You will find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger.

13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel, many hosts of heaven, praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and good hope for men.

15 And it happened, when the angels departed from them and went to heaven, the shepherds spoke to one another, saying, Let us go to Bethlehem, and see this thing that has happened, as the Lord has shown to us.

16 And they came very hurriedly, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe laid in the manger.

17 When they saw it, they made known the word which was spoken to them concerning the boy.

18 And all who heard it were amazed at the things which were spoken by the shepherds.

19 But Mary treasured all these things, and dwelt on them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had seen and heard, as it was spoken to them.

21 And when eight days were fulfilled to circumcise the child, his name was called Jesus; because he was named by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

22 And when the days for their purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

23 As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;

24 And to offer a sacrifice, as it is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simon; and this man was pious and righteous, waiting for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

26 And it was said to him by the Holy Spirit, that he would not see death, until he sees the Anointed of the Lord.

27 This man was led by the Spirit to the temple; and when the parents brought in the boy Jesus, to do for him according to what is commanded in the law,

28 He received him in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29 Now dismiss thy servant, O my Lord, in peace, according to your word;

30 For behold, mine eyes have already seen your mercies,

31 Which you have prepared before the face of all peoples,

32 A light for a revelation to the Gentiles, and a glory to your people Israel.

33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled about these things which were spoken concerning him.

34 And Simon blessed them, and he said to Mary, his mother, Behold, this one is appointed for the fall and for the rise of many in Israel, and for a sign of dispute;

35 And a sword will pierce through your own soul; so that the thoughts of the hearts of many may be revealed.

36 And Hannah the prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, was of a great age; and she had lived seven years with her husband from the days of her virginity.

37 Then she became a widow for about eighty-four years, and she never left the temple, and with fasting and prayer she worshipped day and night.

38 She also stood up at that hour, and gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke concerning him to every man who was looking forward to the salvation of Jerusalem.

39 And when they had done everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

40 The boy grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him.

41 And his people went every year to Jerusalem during the feast of the passover.

42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to the feast, as they were accustomed.

43 And when the feast days were over, they returned; but the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother did not know it.

44 They thought that he was with the children of their party; and when they went a day's journey, they sought for him among their own people and those who knew them.

45 But they could not find him; so they returned again to Jerusalem, looking for him.

46 After three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them, and asking them questions.

47 And all those who heard him were amazed at his wisdom and his answers.

48 And when they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said to him, My son, why have you done so to us? behold, I and your father have been looking for you with much anxiety.

49 He said to them, Why were you looking for me? did you not know that I would be in the house of my Father?

50 But they could not understand the word which he said to them.

51 So he went down with them and came to Nazareth; and he was subject unto them. And his mother treasured all these words in her heart.

52 And Jesus grew in his stature and in his wisdom, and in favor with God and men.

Chapter 2

1 And it came1096 to pass in those1565 days,2250 that there went1831 out a decree1378 from Caesar2541 Augustus 828that all3956 the world3625 should be taxed.582

2 (And this3778 taxing583 was first4413 made1096 when Cyrenius2958 was governor2230 of Syria.4947)

3 And all3956 went4198 to be taxed,582 every1538 one into1519 his own2398 city.4172

4 And Joseph2501 also2532 went305 up from Galilee,1056 out of the city4172 of Nazareth,3478 into1519 Judaea,2449 to the city4172 of David,1138 which3748 is called2564 Bethlehem;965 (because1223 he was of the house3624 and lineage3965 of David:1138)

5 To be taxed582 with Mary3137 his espoused3423 wife,1135 being5607 great with child.1471

6 And so it was, that, while they were there,1563 the days2250 were accomplished4130 that she should be delivered.5088

7 And she brought5088 forth5088 her firstborn4416 son,5207 and wrapped4683 him in swaddling4683 clothes,4683 and laid347 him in a manger;5336 because1360 there was no3756 room5117 for them in the inn.2646

8 And there were in the same846 country5561 shepherds4166 abiding63 in the field,68 keeping5442 watch5438 over1909 their flock4167 by night.3571

9 And, see,2400 the angel32 of the Lord2962 came2186 on them, and the glory1391 of the Lord2962 shone4034 round4034 about4034 them: and they were sore3173 afraid.5399

10 And the angel32 said2036 to them, Fear5399 not: for, behold,2400 I bring2097 you good2097 tidings2097 of great3173 joy,5479 which3748 shall be to all3956 people.2992

11 For to you is born5088 this4594 day4594 in the city4172 of David1138 a Savior,4990 which3739 is Christ5547 the Lord.2962

12 And this5124 shall be a sign4592 to you; You shall find2147 the babe1025 wrapped4683 in swaddling4683 clothes,4683 lying2749 in a manger.5336

13 And suddenly1810 there was with the angel32 a multitude4128 of the heavenly3770 host4756 praising134 God,2316 and saying,3004

14 Glory1391 to God2316 in the highest,5310 and on1909 earth1093 peace,1515 good2107 will2107 toward1722 men.444

15 And it came1096 to pass, as the angels32 were gone565 away565 from them into1519 heaven,3772 the shepherds4166 said2036 one240 to another,240 Let us now1211 go1330 even to Bethlehem,965 and see1492 this5124 thing4487 which3588 is come1096 to pass, which3588 the Lord2962 has made1107 known1107 to us.

16 And they came2064 with haste,4692 and found429 Mary,3137 and Joseph,2501 and the babe1025 lying2749 in a manger.5336

17 And when they had seen1492 it, they made1232 known1232 abroad1232 the saying4487 which3588 was told2980 them concerning4012 this5127 child.3813

18 And all3956 they that heard191 it wondered2296 at4012 those things which3588 were told2980 them by the shepherds.4166

19 But Mary3137 kept4933 all3956 these5023 things,4487 and pondered4820 them in her heart.2588

20 And the shepherds4166 returned,1994 glorifying1392 and praising134 God2316 for all3956 the things that they had heard191 and seen,1492 as it was told2980 to them.

21 And when3753 eight3638 days2250 were accomplished4130 for the circumcising4059 of the child,3813 his name3686 was called2564 JESUS,2424 which3588 was so named2564 of the angel32 before4253 he was conceived4815 in the womb.2836

22 And when3753 the days2250 of her purification2512 according2596 to the law3551 of Moses3475 were accomplished,4130 they brought321 him to Jerusalem,2414 to present3936 him to the Lord;2962

23 (As it is written1125 in the law3551 of the LORD,2962 Every3956 male730 that opens1272 the womb3388 shall be called2564 holy40 to the Lord;2962)

24 And to offer1325 a sacrifice2378 according2596 to that which is said2046 in the law3551 of the Lord,2962 A pair2201 of turtledoves,5167 or2228 two1417 young3502 pigeons.4058

25 And, behold,2400 there was a man444 in Jerusalem,2419 whose3739 name3686 was Simeon;4826 and the same3778 man444 was just1342 and devout,2126 waiting4327 for the consolation3874 of Israel:2474 and the Holy40 Ghost4151 was on him.

26 And it was revealed5537 to him by the Holy40 Ghost,4151 that he should not see1492 death,2288 before4250 2228 he had seen1492 the Lord's2962 Christ.5547

27 And he came2064 by the Spirit4151 into1519 the temple:2411 and when1722 3588 the parents1118 brought1521 in the child3813 Jesus,2424 to do4160 for him after2596 the custom1480 of the law,3551

28 Then2532 took1209 he him up in his arms,43 and blessed2127 God,2316 and said,2036

29 Lord,1203 now3568 let630 you your servant1401 depart630 in peace,1515 according2596 to your word:4487

30 For my3450 eyes3788 have seen1492 your salvation,4992

31 Which3739 you have prepared2090 before2596 the face4383 of all3956 people;2992

32 A light5457 to lighten602 the Gentiles,1484 and the glory1391 of your people2992 Israel.2474

33 And Joseph2501 and his mother3384 marveled2296 at1909 those3588 things which were spoken2980 of him.

34 And Simeon4826 blessed2127 them, and said2036 to Mary3137 his mother,3384 Behold,2400 this3778 child is set2749 for the fall4431 and rising386 again386 of many4183 in Israel;2474 and for a sign4592 which shall be spoken483 against;483

35 (Yes,1161 a sword4501 shall pierce1330 through1330 your own soul5590 also,2532) that the thoughts1261 of many4183 hearts2588 may be revealed.601

36 And there was one Anna,451 a prophetess,4398 the daughter2364 of Phanuel,5323 of the tribe5443 of Aser:768 she was of a great4183 age,2250 and had lived2198 with an husband435 seven2033 years2094 from her virginity;3932

37 And she was a widow5503 of about5613 fourscore3589 and four5064 years,2094 which3739 departed868 not from the temple,2411 but served3000 God with fastings3521 and prayers1162 night3571 and day.2250

38 And she coming2186 in that instant5610 gave437 thanks437 likewise437 to the Lord,2962 and spoke2980 of him to all3956 them that looked4327 for redemption3085 in Jerusalem.2419

39 And when5613 they had performed5055 all537 things according2596 to the law3551 of the Lord,2962 they returned5290 into1519 Galilee,1056 to their own city4172 Nazareth.3478

40 And the child3813 grew,837 and waxed2901 strong2901 in spirit,4151 filled4137 with wisdom:4678 and the grace5485 of God2316 was on him.

41 Now2532 his parents1118 went4198 to Jerusalem2419 every2596 year2094 at the feast1859 of the passover.3957

42 And when3753 he was twelve1427 years2094 old, they went305 up to Jerusalem2414 after2596 the custom1485 of the feast.1859

43 And when they had fulfilled5048 the days,2250 as they returned,5290 the child3816 Jesus2424 tarried5278 behind5278 in Jerusalem;2419 and Joseph2501 and his mother3384 knew1097 not of it.

44 But they, supposing3543 him to have been1511 in the company,4923 went2064 a day's2250 journey;3598 and they sought327 him among1722 their kinsfolk4773 and acquaintance.1110

45 And when they found2147 him not, they turned5290 back5290 again5290 to Jerusalem,2419 seeking2212 him.

46 And it came1096 to pass, that after3326 three5140 days2250 they found2147 him in the temple,2411 sitting2516 in the middle3319 of the doctors,1320 both2532 hearing191 them, and asking1905 them questions.1905

47 And all3956 that heard191 him were astonished1839 at1909 his understanding4907 and answers.612

48 And when they saw1492 him, they were amazed:1605 and his mother3384 said2036 to him, Son,5043 why5101 have you thus3779 dealt4160 with us? behold,2400 your father3962 and I have sought2212 you sorrowing.3600

49 And he said2036 to them, How5101 is it that you sought2212 me? knew1492 you not that I must1163 be about1722 my Father's3962 business?

50 And they understood4920 not the saying4487 which3739 he spoke2980 to them.

51 And he went2597 down2597 with them, and came2064 to Nazareth,3478 and was subject5293 to them: but his mother3384 kept1301 all3956 these5023 sayings4487 in her heart.2588

52 And Jesus2424 increased4298 in wisdom4678 and stature,2244 and in favor5485 with God2316 and man.444

22 And when the days for their purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

22 And when3753 the days2250 of her purification2512 according2596 to the law3551 of Moses3475 were accomplished,4130 they brought321 him to Jerusalem,2414 to present3936 him to the Lord;2962

23 As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;

23 (As it is written1125 in the law3551 of the LORD,2962 Every3956 male730 that opens1272 the womb3388 shall be called2564 holy40 to the Lord;2962)

24 And to offer a sacrifice, as it is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

24 And to offer1325 a sacrifice2378 according2596 to that which is said2046 in the law3551 of the Lord,2962 A pair2201 of turtledoves,5167 or2228 two1417 young3502 pigeons.4058

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simon; and this man was pious and righteous, waiting for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

26 And it was said to him by the Holy Spirit, that he would not see death, until he sees the Anointed of the Lord.

26 And it was revealed5537 to him by the Holy40 Ghost,4151 that he should not see1492 death,2288 before4250 2228 he had seen1492 the Lord's2962 Christ.5547

27 This man was led by the Spirit to the temple; and when the parents brought in the boy Jesus, to do for him according to what is commanded in the law,

27 And he came2064 by the Spirit4151 into1519 the temple:2411 and when1722 3588 the parents1118 brought1521 in the child3813 Jesus,2424 to do4160 for him after2596 the custom1480 of the law,3551

28 He received him in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

28 Then2532 took1209 he him up in his arms,43 and blessed2127 God,2316 and said,2036

29 Now dismiss thy servant, O my Lord, in peace, according to your word;

29 Lord,1203 now3568 let630 you your servant1401 depart630 in peace,1515 according2596 to your word:4487

30 For behold, mine eyes have already seen your mercies,

30 For my3450 eyes3788 have seen1492 your salvation,4992

31 Which you have prepared before the face of all peoples,

31 Which3739 you have prepared2090 before2596 the face4383 of all3956 people;2992

32 A light for a revelation to the Gentiles, and a glory to your people Israel.

32 A light5457 to lighten602 the Gentiles,1484 and the glory1391 of your people2992 Israel.2474
