Chapter 4

1 Then Eliphaz464 the Temanite8489 answered6030 and said,559

2 If we assay5254 to commune1697 with you, will you be grieved?3811 but who4310 can3201 withhold6113 himself from speaking?4405

3 Behold,2009 you have instructed3256 many,7227 and you have strengthened2388 the weak7504 hands.3027

4 Your words4405 have upheld6965 him that was falling,3782 and you have strengthened553 the feeble3766 knees.1290

5 But now6258 it is come935 on you, and you faint;3811 it touches5060 you, and you are troubled.926

6 Is not this your fear,3374 your confidence,3690 your hope,8615 and the uprightness8537 of your ways?1870

7 Remember,2142 I pray4994 you, who4310 ever perished,6 being innocent?5355 or where375 were the righteous6662 cut3582 off?

8 Even as I have seen,7200 they that plow2790 iniquity,205 and sow2232 wickedness,5999 reap7114 the same.

9 By the blast5397 of God433 they perish,6 and by the breath7307 of his nostrils639 are they consumed.3615

10 The roaring7581 of the lion,738 and the voice6963 of the fierce7826 lion,7826 and the teeth8127 of the young3715 lions,3715 are broken.5421

11 The old lion3918 perishes6 for lack1097 of prey,2964 and the stout lion's3833 whelps1121 are scattered6504 abroad.6504

12 Now a thing1697 was secretly1589 brought1589 to me, and my ear241 received3947 a little8102 thereof.

14 Fear6343 came7122 on me, and trembling,7460 which made all7230 my bones6106 to shake.6342

16 It stood5975 still, but I could not discern5234 the form4758 thereof: an image8544 was before5048 my eyes,5869 there was silence,1827 and I heard8085 a voice,6963 saying,

17 Shall mortal582 man582 be more just6663 than God?433 shall a man1400 be more pure2891 than his maker?6213

18 Behold,2005 he put no3808 trust539 in his servants;5650 and his angels4397 he charged7760 with folly:8417

19 How637 much637 less in them that dwell7931 in houses1004 of clay,2563 whose834 foundation3247 is in the dust,6083 which are crushed1792 before6440 the moth?6211

20 They are destroyed3807 from morning1242 to evening:6153 they perish6 for ever5331 without any regarding7760 it.

21 Does not their excellency3499 which is in them go5265 away?5265 they die,4191 even without3808 wisdom.2451

1 И начал Елифаз Феманитянин, и сказал:

2 Можем ли попытаться сказать нечто тебе, изнеможенному? и удержать слова кто бы мог?

3 Вот ты учил многих, и руки расслабленные укреплял;

4 Падающего восставляли слова твои; и колена гнувшиеся ты утверждал.

5 А ныне, когда дошло до тебя, ты изнемог; коснулось тебя, и ты в смятении.

6 Благочестие твое не есть ли надежда твоя? и чистота путей твоих не есть ли упование твое?

7 Вспомни же, кто тот невинный, который погиб, и где были искоренены праведные?

8 Как я видал, оравшие беду и сеявшие скорбь пожинают ее:

9 От дуновения Божия погибают, и от духа гнева Его исчезают.

10 Рев льва и голос рыкающего!.. и зубы скимнов сокрушены!

11 Могучий лев погибает без корму, и дети львицы рассеиваются.

12 И ко мне прокралось слово, и приняло ухо мое шепот его. {Дабы предать более авторитета своим словам, Елифаз делает намек, что он получил откровение.}

13 Во время дум, прежде видений ночных, когда находит глубокий сон на человеков,

14 Ужас объял меня и трепет, и все кости мои потряс.

15 И дух предо мною пронесся; стали дыбом волоса на теле моем.

16 Стоял, - но я не мог распознать вида его, облик пред глазами моими... тихое веяние... и голос слышу:

17 `Смертный пред Богом праведен ли? чист ли человек пред Создавшим его?

18 Се! слугам Своим Он не доверяет; и в Ангелах Своих усматривает недостатки.

19 Что же обитающие в домах из брения, которых основание в прахе?.. они были бы истреблены прежде моли,

20 Между утром и вечером сокрушились бы, навеки погибли бы без призрения.

21 Не исторглась ли бы тетива их у них {образ, свойственный семитам для обозначения смерти: тело они сравнивают с палаткой, - душу с тетивою, которая поддерживает палатку}? умерли бы, но не достигнув мудрости`.
