Chapter 19

1 Then5119 Pilate4091 therefore3767 took2983 Jesus,2424 and scourged3146 him.

2 And the soldiers4757 platted4120 a crown4735 of thorns,173 and put2007 it on2007 his head,2776 and they put4016 on4016 him a purple4210 robe,2440

3 And said,3004 Hail,5463 King935 of the Jews!2453 and they smote1325 4475 him with their hands.4475

4 Pilate4091 therefore3767 went1831 forth1854 again,3825 and said3004 to them, Behold,2396 I bring71 him forth1854 to you, that you may know1097 that I find2147 no3762 fault156 in him.

5 Then3767 came1831 Jesus2424 forth,1854 wearing5409 the crown4735 of thorns,174 and the purple4210 robe.2440 And Pilate said3004 to them, Behold2396 the man!444

6 When3753 the chief749 priests749 therefore3767 and officers5257 saw1492 him, they cried2905 out, saying,3004 Crucify4717 him, crucify4717 him. Pilate4091 said3004 to them, Take2983 you him, and crucify4717 him: for I find2147 no3756 fault156 in him.

7 The Jews2453 answered611 him, We have2192 a law,3551 and by our law3551 he ought3784 to die,599 because3754 he made4160 himself1438 the Son5207 of God.2316

8 When3753 Pilate4091 therefore3767 heard191 that saying,3056 he was the more3123 afraid;5399

9 And went1525 again3825 into1519 the judgment4232 hall,4232 and said3004 to Jesus,2424 From where4159 are1488 you? But Jesus2424 gave1325 him no3756 answer.612

10 Then3767 said3004 Pilate4091 to him, Speak2980 you not to me? know1492 you not that I have2192 power1849 to crucify4717 you, and have2192 power1849 to release630 you?

11 Jesus2424 answered,611 You could have2192 no3756 power1849 at all3762 against2596 me, except1508 it were given1325 you from above:509 therefore1223 5124 he that delivered3860 me to you has2192 the greater3187 sin.266

12 And from thereafter1537 5127 Pilate4091 sought2212 to release630 him: but the Jews2453 cried2896 out, saying,3004 If1437 you let630 this5126 man go,630 you are1488 not Caesar's2541 friend:5384 whoever3956 3588 makes4160 himself848 a king935 speaks483 against483 Caesar.2541

13 When3753 Pilate4091 therefore3767 heard191 that saying,3056 he brought71 Jesus2424 forth,1854 and sat2523 down2523 in the judgment968 seat968 in a place5117 that is called3004 the Pavement,3038 but in the Hebrew,1447 Gabbatha.1042

14 And it was the preparation3904 of the passover,3957 and about5616 the sixth1623 hour:5610 and he said3004 to the Jews,2453 Behold2396 your5216 King!935

15 But they cried2905 out, Away142 with him, away142 with him, crucify4717 him. Pilate4091 said3004 to them, Shall I crucify4717 your5216 King?935 The chief749 priests749 answered,611 We have2192 no3756 king935 but Caesar.2541

16 Then5119 delivered3860 he him therefore3767 to them to be crucified.4717 And they took3880 Jesus,2424 and led520 him away.520

17 And he bearing941 his cross4716 went1831 forth1831 into1519 a place called3004 the place5117 of a skull,2898 which3739 is called3004 in the Hebrew1447 Golgotha:1115

18 Where3699 they crucified4717 him, and two1417 others243 with him, on1782 either1782 2532 side1782 one, and Jesus2424 in the middle.3319

19 And Pilate4091 wrote1125 a title,5102 and put5087 it on1909 the cross.4716 And the writing1125 was JESUS2424 OF NAZARETH3478 THE KING935 OF THE JEWS.2453

20 This5126 title5102 then3767 read314 many4183 of the Jews:2453 for the place5117 where3699 Jesus2424 was crucified4717 was near1451 to the city:4172 and it was written1125 in Hebrew,1447 and Greek,1676 and Latin.4513

21 Then3767 said3004 the chief749 priests749 of the Jews2453 to Pilate,4091 Write1125 not, The King935 of the Jews;2453 but that he said,2036 I am1510 King935 of the Jews.2453

22 Pilate4091 answered,611 What3739 I have2192 written1125 I have2192 written.1125

23 Then3767 the soldiers,4757 when3753 they had crucified4717 Jesus,2424 took2983 his garments,2440 and made4160 four5064 parts,3313 to every1538 soldier4757 a part;3313 and also2532 his coat:5509 now1161 the coat5509 was without729 seam,729 woven5307 from the top509 throughout.1223 3650

24 They said2036 therefore3767 among4314 themselves,240 Let us not rend4977 it, but cast2975 lots2819 for it, whose5101 it shall be: that the scripture1124 might be fulfilled,4137 which3588 said,3004 They parted1266 my raiment2440 among them, and for my clothing2441 they did cast906 lots.2975 These5023 things therefore3767 the soldiers4757 did.4160

25 Now1161 there stood2476 by the cross4716 of Jesus2424 his mother,3384 and his mother's3384 sister,79 Mary3137 the wife of Cleophas,2832 and Mary3137 Magdalene.3094

26 When Jesus2424 therefore3767 saw1492 his mother,3384 and the disciple3101 standing3936 by, whom3739 he loved,25 he said3004 to his mother,3384 Woman,1135 behold2400 your son!5207

27 Then1534 said3004 he to the disciple,3101 Behold2400 your mother!3384 And from that hour5610 that disciple3101 took2983 her to his own2398 home.3624

28 After3326 this,5124 Jesus2424 knowing1492 that all3956 things were now2235 accomplished,5055 that the scripture1124 might be fulfilled,5048 said,3004 I thirst.1372

29 Now3767 there was set2749 a vessel4632 full3324 of vinegar:3690 and they filled4130 a sponge4699 with vinegar,3690 and put4060 it on hyssop,5301 and put4374 it to his mouth.4750

30 When3753 Jesus2424 therefore3767 had received2983 the vinegar,3690 he said,2036 It is finished:5055 and he bowed2827 his head,2776 and gave3860 up the ghost.4151

31 The Jews2453 therefore,3767 because1893 it was the preparation,3904 that the bodies4983 should not remain3306 on the cross4716 on1722 the sabbath4521 day, (for that sabbath4521 day was an high3173 day,) sought2065 Pilate4091 that their legs4628 might be broken,2608 and that they might be taken142 away.

32 Then3767 came2064 the soldiers,4757 and broke2608 the legs4628 of the first,4413 and of the other243 which3588 was crucified4957 with him.

33 But when5613 they came2064 to Jesus,2424 and saw1492 that he was dead2348 already,2235 they broke2608 not his legs:4628

34 But one1520 of the soldiers4757 with a spear3057 pierced3572 his side,4125 and immediately2117 came1831 there out blood129 and water.5204

35 And he that saw3708 it bore3140 record,3140 and his record3141 is true:228 and he knows1492 that he said3004 true,227 that you might believe.4100

36 For these5023 things were done,1096 that the scripture1124 should be fulfilled,4137 A bone3747 of him shall not be broken.4937

37 And again3825 another2087 scripture1124 said,3004 They shall look3700 on1519 him whom3739 they pierced.1574

38 And after3326 this5023 Joseph2501 of Arimathaea,707 being5607 a disciple3101 of Jesus,2424 but secretly2928 for fear5401 of the Jews,2453 sought2065 Pilate4091 that he might take142 away the body4983 of Jesus:2424 and Pilate4091 gave2010 him leave.2010 He came2064 therefore,3767 and took142 the body4983 of Jesus.2424

39 And there came2064 also2532 Nicodemus,3530 which3588 at the first4412 came2064 to Jesus2424 by night,3571 and brought5342 a mixture3395 of myrrh4666 and aloes,250 about5616 an hundred1540 pound3046 weight.

40 Then3767 took2983 they the body4983 of Jesus,2424 and wound1210 it in linen3608 clothes3608 with the spices,759 as the manner1485 of the Jews2453 is to bury.1779

41 Now1161 in the place5117 where3699 he was crucified4717 there was a garden;2779 and in the garden2779 a new2537 sepulcher,3419 wherein1722 3757 was never3764 man3762 yet3764 laid.5087

42 There1563 laid5087 they Jesus2424 therefore3767 because1223 of the Jews'2453 preparation3904 day; for the sepulcher3419 was near1451 at1451 hand.

Chapter 19

1 THEN Pilate had Jesus scourged.

2 A nd the soldiers wove a crown of thorns, and placed it on his head, and they covered him with purple robes;

3 And they said, Peace be to you, O king of the Jews! and they struck him on his cheeks.

4 Pilate again went outside and said to them, Behold, I bring him outside to you, so that you may know that I find not even one cause against him.

5 So Jesus went outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robes. And Pilate said to them, Behold the man!

6 When the high priests and the guards saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him! Pilate said to them, You take him and crucify him; for I find no cause in him.

7 The Jews said to him, We have a law, and according to our law he is guilty of death, because he made himself the Son of God.

8 When Pilate heard this saying, he was the more afraid;

9 So he entered again into the praetorium, and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Pilate said to him, Will you not speak even to me? Do you not know that I have the authority to release you, and I have the authority to crucify you?

11 Jesus said to him, You would have no authority whatever over me, if it had not been given to you from above; for this reason the sin of him who delivered me to you is greater than yours.

12 And because of this, Pilate wanted to release him; but the Jews cried out, If you release this man you are not a friend of Caesar; for whoever makes himself a king is against Caesar.

13 When Pilate heard this word, he brought Jesus outside; then he sat down on the judgment seat, at a place which is called the Stone Pavement but in Hebrew it is called, Gabbatha.

14 It was Friday of the passover, and it was about six o'clock; and he said to the Jews, Behold your king!

15 But they cried out, Take him away, take him away, crucify him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your king? The high priests said to him, We have no king except Caesar.

16 Then he delivered him to them to crucify him. So they took hold of Jesus and took him out,

17 Carrying his cross, to the place which is called The Skull, but in Hebrew it is called Golgotha;

18 Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between.

19 Pilate also wrote on a stone tablet, and placed it on his cross. And the writing was, THIS IS JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 And a great many Jews read this tablet, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew* and in Greek and in Roman.

21 The high priests then said to Pilate, Do not write that he is the king of the Jews; but that he said, I am the king of the Jews.

22 Pilate said, What I have written, I have written.

23 Now when the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part to each of the soldiers; but his robe was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24 So they said one to another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose lot it shall be. And the scripture was fulfilled, which said, They divided my clothes among them, and for my robe they cast lots. These things the soldiers did.

25 Now there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, and Mary of Cleopas, and Mary of Magdala.

26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing, he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son!

27 Then he said to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that very hour the disciple took her with him.

28 After these things Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished; and that the scripture might be fulfilled, he said, I thirst.

29 Now there was a pitcher full of vinegar placed there; so they filled a sponge with vinegar and put it on the point of a reed, and placed it on his mouth.

30 When Jesus drank the vinegar, he said, It is fulfilled; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now because it was Friday the Jews said, Let not these bodies remain on their crosses because the sabbath is dawning; for that sabbath was a great day. So they besought Pilate to have the legs of those who were crucified broken, and to have them lowered down.

32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first one, and of the other one who was crucified with him.

33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead already, so they did not break his legs.

34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

35 And he who saw it testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows well that what he said is true, that you also may believe.

36 For these things happened that the scripture might be fulfilled, which said, Not even a bone shall be broken in him;

37 And again another scripture which said, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because of fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate granted him permission. So he came and took away the body of Jesus.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, who at first had come to Jesus by night; and he brought with him a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pints.

40 So they took away the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the custom of the Jews in burial.

41 Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified; and in the garden a new tomb, in which no man was yet laid.

42 So they laid Jesus there, because the sabbath was approaching and because the tomb was near.

Chapter 19

1 Then5119 Pilate4091 therefore3767 took2983 Jesus,2424 and scourged3146 him.

1 THEN Pilate had Jesus scourged.

2 And the soldiers4757 platted4120 a crown4735 of thorns,173 and put2007 it on2007 his head,2776 and they put4016 on4016 him a purple4210 robe,2440

2 A nd the soldiers wove a crown of thorns, and placed it on his head, and they covered him with purple robes;

3 And said,3004 Hail,5463 King935 of the Jews!2453 and they smote1325 4475 him with their hands.4475

3 And they said, Peace be to you, O king of the Jews! and they struck him on his cheeks.

4 Pilate4091 therefore3767 went1831 forth1854 again,3825 and said3004 to them, Behold,2396 I bring71 him forth1854 to you, that you may know1097 that I find2147 no3762 fault156 in him.

4 Pilate again went outside and said to them, Behold, I bring him outside to you, so that you may know that I find not even one cause against him.

5 Then3767 came1831 Jesus2424 forth,1854 wearing5409 the crown4735 of thorns,174 and the purple4210 robe.2440 And Pilate said3004 to them, Behold2396 the man!444

5 So Jesus went outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robes. And Pilate said to them, Behold the man!

6 When the high priests and the guards saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him! Pilate said to them, You take him and crucify him; for I find no cause in him.

7 The Jews2453 answered611 him, We have2192 a law,3551 and by our law3551 he ought3784 to die,599 because3754 he made4160 himself1438 the Son5207 of God.2316

7 The Jews said to him, We have a law, and according to our law he is guilty of death, because he made himself the Son of God.

8 When3753 Pilate4091 therefore3767 heard191 that saying,3056 he was the more3123 afraid;5399

8 When Pilate heard this saying, he was the more afraid;

9 And went1525 again3825 into1519 the judgment4232 hall,4232 and said3004 to Jesus,2424 From where4159 are1488 you? But Jesus2424 gave1325 him no3756 answer.612

9 So he entered again into the praetorium, and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then3767 said3004 Pilate4091 to him, Speak2980 you not to me? know1492 you not that I have2192 power1849 to crucify4717 you, and have2192 power1849 to release630 you?

10 Pilate said to him, Will you not speak even to me? Do you not know that I have the authority to release you, and I have the authority to crucify you?

11 Jesus2424 answered,611 You could have2192 no3756 power1849 at all3762 against2596 me, except1508 it were given1325 you from above:509 therefore1223 5124 he that delivered3860 me to you has2192 the greater3187 sin.266

11 Jesus said to him, You would have no authority whatever over me, if it had not been given to you from above; for this reason the sin of him who delivered me to you is greater than yours.

12 And because of this, Pilate wanted to release him; but the Jews cried out, If you release this man you are not a friend of Caesar; for whoever makes himself a king is against Caesar.

13 When Pilate heard this word, he brought Jesus outside; then he sat down on the judgment seat, at a place which is called the Stone Pavement but in Hebrew it is called, Gabbatha.

14 And it was the preparation3904 of the passover,3957 and about5616 the sixth1623 hour:5610 and he said3004 to the Jews,2453 Behold2396 your5216 King!935

14 It was Friday of the passover, and it was about six o'clock; and he said to the Jews, Behold your king!

15 But they cried2905 out, Away142 with him, away142 with him, crucify4717 him. Pilate4091 said3004 to them, Shall I crucify4717 your5216 King?935 The chief749 priests749 answered,611 We have2192 no3756 king935 but Caesar.2541

15 But they cried out, Take him away, take him away, crucify him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your king? The high priests said to him, We have no king except Caesar.

16 Then5119 delivered3860 he him therefore3767 to them to be crucified.4717 And they took3880 Jesus,2424 and led520 him away.520

16 Then he delivered him to them to crucify him. So they took hold of Jesus and took him out,

17 And he bearing941 his cross4716 went1831 forth1831 into1519 a place called3004 the place5117 of a skull,2898 which3739 is called3004 in the Hebrew1447 Golgotha:1115

17 Carrying his cross, to the place which is called The Skull, but in Hebrew it is called Golgotha;

18 Where3699 they crucified4717 him, and two1417 others243 with him, on1782 either1782 2532 side1782 one, and Jesus2424 in the middle.3319

18 Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between.

19 And Pilate4091 wrote1125 a title,5102 and put5087 it on1909 the cross.4716 And the writing1125 was JESUS2424 OF NAZARETH3478 THE KING935 OF THE JEWS.2453

19 Pilate also wrote on a stone tablet, and placed it on his cross. And the writing was, THIS IS JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 This5126 title5102 then3767 read314 many4183 of the Jews:2453 for the place5117 where3699 Jesus2424 was crucified4717 was near1451 to the city:4172 and it was written1125 in Hebrew,1447 and Greek,1676 and Latin.4513

20 And a great many Jews read this tablet, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew* and in Greek and in Roman.

21 Then3767 said3004 the chief749 priests749 of the Jews2453 to Pilate,4091 Write1125 not, The King935 of the Jews;2453 but that he said,2036 I am1510 King935 of the Jews.2453

21 The high priests then said to Pilate, Do not write that he is the king of the Jews; but that he said, I am the king of the Jews.

22 Pilate4091 answered,611 What3739 I have2192 written1125 I have2192 written.1125

22 Pilate said, What I have written, I have written.

23 Now when the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part to each of the soldiers; but his robe was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24 So they said one to another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose lot it shall be. And the scripture was fulfilled, which said, They divided my clothes among them, and for my robe they cast lots. These things the soldiers did.

25 Now1161 there stood2476 by the cross4716 of Jesus2424 his mother,3384 and his mother's3384 sister,79 Mary3137 the wife of Cleophas,2832 and Mary3137 Magdalene.3094

25 Now there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, and Mary of Cleopas, and Mary of Magdala.

26 When Jesus2424 therefore3767 saw1492 his mother,3384 and the disciple3101 standing3936 by, whom3739 he loved,25 he said3004 to his mother,3384 Woman,1135 behold2400 your son!5207

26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing, he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son!

27 Then1534 said3004 he to the disciple,3101 Behold2400 your mother!3384 And from that hour5610 that disciple3101 took2983 her to his own2398 home.3624

27 Then he said to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that very hour the disciple took her with him.

28 After3326 this,5124 Jesus2424 knowing1492 that all3956 things were now2235 accomplished,5055 that the scripture1124 might be fulfilled,5048 said,3004 I thirst.1372

28 After these things Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished; and that the scripture might be fulfilled, he said, I thirst.

29 Now3767 there was set2749 a vessel4632 full3324 of vinegar:3690 and they filled4130 a sponge4699 with vinegar,3690 and put4060 it on hyssop,5301 and put4374 it to his mouth.4750

29 Now there was a pitcher full of vinegar placed there; so they filled a sponge with vinegar and put it on the point of a reed, and placed it on his mouth.

30 When3753 Jesus2424 therefore3767 had received2983 the vinegar,3690 he said,2036 It is finished:5055 and he bowed2827 his head,2776 and gave3860 up the ghost.4151

30 When Jesus drank the vinegar, he said, It is fulfilled; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now because it was Friday the Jews said, Let not these bodies remain on their crosses because the sabbath is dawning; for that sabbath was a great day. So they besought Pilate to have the legs of those who were crucified broken, and to have them lowered down.

32 Then3767 came2064 the soldiers,4757 and broke2608 the legs4628 of the first,4413 and of the other243 which3588 was crucified4957 with him.

32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first one, and of the other one who was crucified with him.

33 But when5613 they came2064 to Jesus,2424 and saw1492 that he was dead2348 already,2235 they broke2608 not his legs:4628

33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead already, so they did not break his legs.

34 But one1520 of the soldiers4757 with a spear3057 pierced3572 his side,4125 and immediately2117 came1831 there out blood129 and water.5204

34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

35 And he that saw3708 it bore3140 record,3140 and his record3141 is true:228 and he knows1492 that he said3004 true,227 that you might believe.4100

35 And he who saw it testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows well that what he said is true, that you also may believe.

36 For these5023 things were done,1096 that the scripture1124 should be fulfilled,4137 A bone3747 of him shall not be broken.4937

36 For these things happened that the scripture might be fulfilled, which said, Not even a bone shall be broken in him;

37 And again3825 another2087 scripture1124 said,3004 They shall look3700 on1519 him whom3739 they pierced.1574

37 And again another scripture which said, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because of fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate granted him permission. So he came and took away the body of Jesus.

39 And there came2064 also2532 Nicodemus,3530 which3588 at the first4412 came2064 to Jesus2424 by night,3571 and brought5342 a mixture3395 of myrrh4666 and aloes,250 about5616 an hundred1540 pound3046 weight.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, who at first had come to Jesus by night; and he brought with him a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pints.

40 Then3767 took2983 they the body4983 of Jesus,2424 and wound1210 it in linen3608 clothes3608 with the spices,759 as the manner1485 of the Jews2453 is to bury.1779

40 So they took away the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the custom of the Jews in burial.

41 Now1161 in the place5117 where3699 he was crucified4717 there was a garden;2779 and in the garden2779 a new2537 sepulcher,3419 wherein1722 3757 was never3764 man3762 yet3764 laid.5087

41 Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified; and in the garden a new tomb, in which no man was yet laid.

42 There1563 laid5087 they Jesus2424 therefore3767 because1223 of the Jews'2453 preparation3904 day; for the sepulcher3419 was near1451 at1451 hand.

42 So they laid Jesus there, because the sabbath was approaching and because the tomb was near.
