Luke

Chapter 18

1 HE also spake to them a parable, that they should pray always and not get weary.

2 There was a judge in a city, who did not fear God, and had no regard for men.

3 There was a widow in that city, and she used to come to him, saying, Avenge me of my accuser.

4 And he would not for a long time; but afterwards he said within himself, Though I am not afraid of God, and have no regard for men;

5 Yet because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, so that she may not keep coming and annoy me.

6 Then our Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge said.

7 Would not God avenge his chosen ones much more, who call upon him day and night, though he has patience with them?

8 I say to you, he will avenge them promptly. But when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on the earth?

9 And he said this parable against the men who relied upon themselves that they were righteous, and despised every man.

10 Two men went up to the temple to pray; one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

11 And the Pharisee stood by himself, and prayed thus: O God, I thank thee, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, grafters, adulterers, and not like this publican.

12 But I fast twice a week, and I give tithes on everything I earn.

13 But the publican stood afar off, and he would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote his breast, saying, O God, be merciful to me, I am a sinner.

14 I say to you, that this man went down to his house more righteous than the Pharisee. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled; and everyone who humbles himself will be exalted.

15 They brought to him also little boys, that he might touch them; and his disciples saw them and rebuked them.

16 But Jesus called them, and said to them, Permit the children to come to me, and do not stop them; for the kingdom of heaven is for those who are like these.

17 Truly I say to you, He who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little boy will never enter into it.

18 A nd one of the leaders asked him and said to him, O good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit life everlasting?

19 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? there is no one good, except one, that is God.

20 You know the commandments: You shall not kill; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and your mother.

21 He said to him, All these I have obeyed from my boyhood.

22 When Jesus heard it, he said to him, You lack one thing; go, sell everything you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven; and come and follow me.

23 But when he heard these things, he felt sad, because he was very rich.

24 And when Jesus saw that he felt sad, he said, How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter into the kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a rope to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

26 Those who heard it said to him, Who then can be saved?

27 But Jesus said, Those things which are impossible to men are possible to God.

28 Simon Peter said to him, Behold we have left everything and followed you.

29 Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, that there is no man who leaves houses, or parents, or brothers, or wife, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God,

30 Who will not receive many times more at this time, and in the world to come life everlasting.

31 Then Jesus took the twelve and said to them, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man will be fulfilled.

32 For he will be delivered to the Gentiles, and they will mock him, and spit in his face.

33 And they will scourge him, and curse him, and kill him; and on the third day he will rise again.

34 But they understood not one of these things; and this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know these things which were spoken to them.

35 And when he drew near Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside and begging.

36 And he heard the voice of the people passing, and asked, Who is this?

37 They said to him, Jesus the Nazarene is passing.

38 And he cried and said, O Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.

39 And those who were going before Jesus rebuked him, to keep quiet; but he cried the more, O son of David, have mercy on me.

40 So Jesus stood still, and commanded to call him to him; and as he came near him he asked him,

41 And said to him, What do you wish me to do for you? He answered and said, My Lord, that I may see.

42 And Jesus said to him, See; your faith has healed you.

43 And he saw immediately, and followed him, and praised God; and all the people who saw it, gave praise to God.

Chapter 18

1 And he spoke3004 a parable3850 to them to this3588 end, that men ought1163 always3842 to pray,4336 and not to faint;1573

2 Saying,3004 There was in a city4172 a judge,2923 which feared5399 not God,2316 neither3366 regarded1788 man:444

3 And there was a widow5503 in that city;4172 and she came2064 to him, saying,3004 Avenge1556 me of my3450 adversary.476

4 And he would2309 not for a while:5550 but afterward3326 5023 he said2036 within1722 himself,1438 Though1499 I fear5399 not God,2316 nor3756 regard1788 man;444

5 Yet1065 because1223 this5026 widow5503 troubles3930 2873 me, I will avenge1556 her, lest2443 3361 by her continual1519 5056 coming2064 she weary5299 me.

6 And the Lord2962 said,2036 Hear191 what5101 the unjust93 judge2923 said.3004

7 And shall not God2316 avenge4160 his own elect,1588 which3588 cry994 day2250 and night3571 to him, though2532 he bear3114 long3114 with them?

8 I tell3004 you that he will avenge4160 them speedily.1722 5034 Nevertheless4133 when the Son5207 of man444 comes,2064 shall he find2147 faith4102 on1909 the earth?1093

9 And he spoke2036 this5026 parable3850 to certain5100 which3588 trusted3982 in themselves1438 that they were righteous,1342 and despised1848 others:3062

10 Two1417 men444 went305 up into1519 the temple2411 to pray;4336 the one1520 a Pharisee,5330 and the other2087 a publican.5057

11 The Pharisee5330 stood2476 and prayed4336 thus5023 with himself,1438 God,2316 I thank2168 you, that I am1510 not as other3062 men444 are, extortionists,727 unjust,94 adulterers,3432 or2228 even2532 as this3778 publican.5057

12 I fast3522 twice1364 in the week,4521 I give tithes586 of all3956 that I possess.2932

13 And the publican,5057 standing2476 afar3113 off, would2309 not lift1869 up so3761 much3761 as his eyes3788 to heaven,3772 but smote5180 on his breast,4738 saying,3004 God2316 be merciful2433 to me a sinner.268

14 I tell3004 you, this3778 man went2597 down2597 to his house3624 justified1344 rather than2228 the other:1565 for every3956 one that exalts5312 himself1438 shall be abased;5013 and he that humbles5013 himself1438 shall be exalted.5312

15 And they brought4374 to him also2532 infants,1025 that he would touch680 them: but when his disciples3101 saw1492 it, they rebuked2008 them.

16 But Jesus2424 called4341 them to him, and said,2036 Suffer863 little3813 children3813 to come2064 to me, and forbid2967 them not: for of such5108 is the kingdom932 of God.2316

17 Truly281 I say3004 to you, Whoever3739 1437 shall not receive1209 the kingdom932 of God2316 as a little3813 child3813 shall in no3364 wise enter1525 therein.1519 846

18 And a certain5100 ruler758 asked1905 him, saying,3004 Good18 Master,1320 what5101 shall I do4160 to inherit2816 eternal166 life?2222

19 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Why5101 call3004 you me good?18 none3762 is good,18 save1508 one,1520 that is, God.2316

20 You know1492 the commandments,1785 Do not commit3431 adultery,3431 Do not kill,5407 Do not steal,2813 Do not bear5576 false5576 witness,5576 Honor5091 your father3962 and your mother.

21 And he said,2036 All3956 these5023 have I kept5442 from my youth3503 up.

22 Now1161 when Jesus2424 heard191 these5023 things, he said2036 to him, Yet2089 lack3007 you one1520 thing: sell4453 all3956 that you have,2192 and distribute1239 to the poor,4434 and you shall have2192 treasure2344 in heaven:3772 and come,1204 follow190 me.

23 And when he heard191 this,5023 he was very4970 sorrowful:4036 for he was very4970 rich.4145

24 And when Jesus2424 saw1492 that he was very4036 sorrowful,4036 he said,2036 How4459 hardly1423 shall they that have2192 riches5536 enter1525 into1519 the kingdom932 of God!2316

25 For it is easier2123 for a camel2574 to go1525 through1223 a needle's4476 eye,5168 than2228 for a rich4145 man to enter1525 into1519 the kingdom932 of God.2316

26 And they that heard191 it said,2036 Who5101 then2532 can1410 be saved?4982

27 And he said,2036 The things which are impossible102 with men444 are possible1415 with God.2316

28 Then1161 Peter4074 said,2036 See,2400 we have left863 all,3956 and followed190 you.

29 And he said2036 to them, Truly281 I say3004 to you, There is no3762 man3762 that has left863 house,3614 or2228 parents,1118 or2228 brothers,80 or2228 wife,1135 or2228 children,5043 for the kingdom932 of God's2316 sake,1752

30 Who3739 shall not receive618 manifold4179 more4179 in this5129 present time,2540 and in the world165 to come2064 life2222 everlasting.166

31 Then1161 he took3880 to him the twelve,1427 and said2036 to them, Behold,2400 we go305 up to Jerusalem,2414 and all3956 things that are written1125 by the prophets4396 concerning the Son5207 of man444 shall be accomplished.5055

32 For he shall be delivered3860 to the Gentiles,1484 and shall be mocked,1702 and spitefully5195 entreated,5195 and spitted1716 on:1716

33 And they shall whip3146 him, and put615 him to death:615 and the third5154 day2250 he shall rise450 again.450

34 And they understood4920 none3762 of these5130 things: and this5124 saying4487 was hid2928 from them, neither2532 3756 knew1097 they the things which were spoken.3004

35 And it came1096 to pass, that as he was come1448 near1448 to Jericho,2410 a certain5100 blind5185 man sat2521 by the way3598 side3844 begging:4319

36 And hearing191 the multitude3793 pass1279 by, he asked4441 what5101 it meant.1498

37 And they told518 him, that Jesus2424 of Nazareth3478 passes3928 by.

38 And he cried,994 saying,3004 Jesus,2424 you Son5207 of David,1138 have mercy1653 on me.

39 And they which went4254 before4254 rebuked2008 him, that he should hold4623 his peace:4623 but he cried2896 so3123 much4183 the more,3123 You son5207 of David,1138 have mercy1653 on me.

40 And Jesus2424 stood,2476 and commanded2753 him to be brought71 to him: and when he was come1448 near,1448 he asked1905 him,

41 Saying,3004 What5101 will2309 you that I shall do4160 to you? And he said,2036 Lord,2962 that I may receive308 my sight.308

42 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Receive308 your sight:308 your faith4102 has saved4982 you.

43 And immediately3916 he received308 his sight,308 and followed190 him, glorifying1392 God:2316 and all3956 the people,2992 when they saw1492 it, gave1325 praise136 to God.2316

9 And he spoke2036 this5026 parable3850 to certain5100 which3588 trusted3982 in themselves1438 that they were righteous,1342 and despised1848 others:3062

10 Two men went up to the temple to pray; one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

10 Two1417 men444 went305 up into1519 the temple2411 to pray;4336 the one1520 a Pharisee,5330 and the other2087 a publican.5057

11 And the Pharisee stood by himself, and prayed thus: O God, I thank thee, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, grafters, adulterers, and not like this publican.

12 But I fast twice a week, and I give tithes on everything I earn.

12 I fast3522 twice1364 in the week,4521 I give tithes586 of all3956 that I possess.2932

13 But the publican stood afar off, and he would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote his breast, saying, O God, be merciful to me, I am a sinner.

13 And the publican,5057 standing2476 afar3113 off, would2309 not lift1869 up so3761 much3761 as his eyes3788 to heaven,3772 but smote5180 on his breast,4738 saying,3004 God2316 be merciful2433 to me a sinner.268

14 I say to you, that this man went down to his house more righteous than the Pharisee. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled; and everyone who humbles himself will be exalted.

14 I tell3004 you, this3778 man went2597 down2597 to his house3624 justified1344 rather than2228 the other:1565 for every3956 one that exalts5312 himself1438 shall be abased;5013 and he that humbles5013 himself1438 shall be exalted.5312

15 They brought to him also little boys, that he might touch them; and his disciples saw them and rebuked them.

18 A nd one of the leaders asked him and said to him, O good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit life everlasting?

18 And a certain5100 ruler758 asked1905 him, saying,3004 Good18 Master,1320 what5101 shall I do4160 to inherit2816 eternal166 life?2222

19 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? there is no one good, except one, that is God.

19 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Why5101 call3004 you me good?18 none3762 is good,18 save1508 one,1520 that is, God.2316

23 But when he heard these things, he felt sad, because he was very rich.

23 And when he heard191 this,5023 he was very4970 sorrowful:4036 for he was very4970 rich.4145

24 And when Jesus saw that he felt sad, he said, How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter into the kingdom of God!

24 And when Jesus2424 saw1492 that he was very4036 sorrowful,4036 he said,2036 How4459 hardly1423 shall they that have2192 riches5536 enter1525 into1519 the kingdom932 of God!2316

25 It is easier for a rope to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

25 For it is easier2123 for a camel2574 to go1525 through1223 a needle's4476 eye,5168 than2228 for a rich4145 man to enter1525 into1519 the kingdom932 of God.2316

26 Those who heard it said to him, Who then can be saved?

26 And they that heard191 it said,2036 Who5101 then2532 can1410 be saved?4982

27 But Jesus said, Those things which are impossible to men are possible to God.

27 And he said,2036 The things which are impossible102 with men444 are possible1415 with God.2316

28 Simon Peter said to him, Behold we have left everything and followed you.

28 Then1161 Peter4074 said,2036 See,2400 we have left863 all,3956 and followed190 you.

29 Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, that there is no man who leaves houses, or parents, or brothers, or wife, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God,

30 Who will not receive many times more at this time, and in the world to come life everlasting.

30 Who3739 shall not receive618 manifold4179 more4179 in this5129 present time,2540 and in the world165 to come2064 life2222 everlasting.166

31 Then Jesus took the twelve and said to them, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man will be fulfilled.

31 Then1161 he took3880 to him the twelve,1427 and said2036 to them, Behold,2400 we go305 up to Jerusalem,2414 and all3956 things that are written1125 by the prophets4396 concerning the Son5207 of man444 shall be accomplished.5055

32 For he will be delivered to the Gentiles, and they will mock him, and spit in his face.

32 For he shall be delivered3860 to the Gentiles,1484 and shall be mocked,1702 and spitefully5195 entreated,5195 and spitted1716 on:1716

33 And they will scourge him, and curse him, and kill him; and on the third day he will rise again.

33 And they shall whip3146 him, and put615 him to death:615 and the third5154 day2250 he shall rise450 again.450

34 But they understood not one of these things; and this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know these things which were spoken to them.

34 And they understood4920 none3762 of these5130 things: and this5124 saying4487 was hid2928 from them, neither2532 3756 knew1097 they the things which were spoken.3004

35 And when he drew near Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside and begging.

35 And it came1096 to pass, that as he was come1448 near1448 to Jericho,2410 a certain5100 blind5185 man sat2521 by the way3598 side3844 begging:4319

36 And he heard the voice of the people passing, and asked, Who is this?

36 And hearing191 the multitude3793 pass1279 by, he asked4441 what5101 it meant.1498

37 They said to him, Jesus the Nazarene is passing.

37 And they told518 him, that Jesus2424 of Nazareth3478 passes3928 by.

38 And he cried and said, O Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.

38 And he cried,994 saying,3004 Jesus,2424 you Son5207 of David,1138 have mercy1653 on me.

39 And those who were going before Jesus rebuked him, to keep quiet; but he cried the more, O son of David, have mercy on me.

39 And they which went4254 before4254 rebuked2008 him, that he should hold4623 his peace:4623 but he cried2896 so3123 much4183 the more,3123 You son5207 of David,1138 have mercy1653 on me.

40 So Jesus stood still, and commanded to call him to him; and as he came near him he asked him,
