Luke

Chapter 16

1 And he said3004 also2532 to his disciples,3101 There was a certain5100 rich4145 man,444 which3739 had2192 a steward;3623 and the same3778 was accused1225 to him that he had wasted1287 his goods.5224

2 And he called5455 him, and said2036 to him, How5101 is it that I hear191 this5124 of you? give591 an account3056 of your stewardship;3622 for you may1410 be no3756 longer2089 steward.3621

3 Then1161 the steward3622 said2036 within1722 himself,1438 What5101 shall I do?4160 for my lord2962 takes851 away851 from me the stewardship:3622 I cannot3756 2480 dig;4626 to beg1871 I am ashamed.153

4 I am resolved1097 what5101 to do,4160 that, when3752 I am put3179 out of the stewardship,3622 they may receive1209 me into1519 their houses.3624

5 So2532 he called4341 every1538 one1520 of his lord's2962 debtors5533 to him, and said3004 to the first,4413 How4214 much4214 owe3784 you to my lord?2962

6 And he said,2036 An hundred1540 measures943 of oil.1637 And he said2036 to him, Take1209 your bill,1121 and sit2523 down2523 quickly,5030 and write1125 fifty.4004

7 Then1899 said2036 he to another,2087 And how4214 much4214 owe3784 you? And he said,2036 An hundred1540 measures2884 of wheat.4621 And he said3004 to him, Take1209 your bill,1121 and write1125 fourscore.3589

8 And the lord2962 commended1867 the unjust93 steward,3622 because3754 he had done4160 wisely:5430 for the children5207 of this5127 world165 are in their generation1074 wiser5429 than5228 the children5207 of light.5457

9 And I say3004 to you, Make4160 to yourselves1438 friends5384 of the mammon3126 of unrighteousness;93 that, when3752 you fail,1587 they may receive1209 you into1519 everlasting166 habitations.4633

10 He that is faithful4103 in that which is least1646 is faithful4103 also2532 in much:4183 and he that is unjust94 in the least1646 is unjust94 also2532 in much.4183

11 If1487 therefore3767 you have not been1096 faithful4103 in the unrighteous94 mammon,3126 who5101 will commit4100 to your5213 trust4100 the true228 riches?

12 And if1487 you have not been1096 faithful4103 in that which is another245 man's,245 who5101 shall give1325 you that which is your5212 own?

13 No3762 servant3610 can1410 serve1398 two1417 masters:2962 for either2228 he will hate3404 the one,1520 and love25 the other;2087 or2228 else he will hold472 to the one,1520 and despise2706 the other.2087 You cannot3756 1410 serve1398 God2316 and mammon.3126

14 And the Pharisees5330 also,2532 who were covetous,5366 heard191 all3956 these5023 things: and they derided1592 him.

15 And he said2036 to them, You are they which3588 justify1344 yourselves1438 before1799 men;444 but God2316 knows1097 your5216 hearts:2588 for that which is highly5308 esteemed among1722 men444 is abomination946 in the sight1799 of God.2316

16 The law3551 and the prophets4396 were until2193 John:2491 since575 that time5119 the kingdom932 of God2316 is preached,2097 and every3956 man presses971 into1519 it.

17 And it is easier2123 for heaven3772 and earth1093 to pass,3928 than2228 one3391 pronunciation mark2762 of the law3551 to fail.4098

18 Whoever3956 3588 puts630 away630 his wife,1135 and marries1060 another,2087 commits3431 adultery:3431 and whoever3956 3588 marries1060 her that is put630 away630 from her husband435 commits3431 adultery.3431

19 There was a certain5100 rich4145 man,444 which2532 was clothed1737 in purple4209 and fine linen,1040 and fared2165 sumptuously2988 every2596 day:2250

20 And there was a certain5100 beggar4434 named3686 Lazarus,2976 which3739 was laid906 at4314 his gate,4440 full of sores,1669

21 And desiring1937 to be fed5526 with the crumbs5589 which3588 fell4098 from the rich4145 man's table:5132 moreover235 2532 the dogs2965 came2064 and licked621 his sores.1668

22 And it came1096 to pass, that the beggar4434 died,599 and was carried667 by the angels32 into1519 Abraham's11 bosom:2859 the rich4145 man also2532 died,599 and was buried;2290

23 And in hell86 he lift1869 up his eyes,3788 being5225 in torments,931 and sees3708 Abraham11 afar3113 off,575 and Lazarus2976 in his bosom.2859

24 And he cried5455 and said,2036 Father3962 Abraham,11 have mercy1653 on me, and send3992 Lazarus,2976 that he may dip911 the tip206 of his finger1147 in water,5204 and cool2711 my tongue;1100 for I am tormented3600 in this5026 flame.5395

25 But Abraham11 said,2036 Son,5043 remember3415 that you in your lifetime2222 received618 your good18 things, and likewise3668 Lazarus2976 evil2556 things: but now3568 he is comforted,3870 and you are tormented.3600

26 And beside1909 all3956 this,5125 between3342 us and you there is a great3173 gulf5490 fixed:4741 so3704 that they which would2309 pass1224 from hence1782 to you cannot;3361 1410 neither3366 can1410 they pass1276 to us, that would come from there.1564

27 Then1161 he said,2036 I pray2065 you therefore,3767 father,3962 that you would send3992 him to my father's3962 house:3624

28 For I have2192 five4002 brothers;80 that he may testify1263 to them, lest2443 3361 they also2532 come2064 into1519 this5126 place5117 of torment.931

29 Abraham11 said3004 to him, They have2192 Moses3475 and the prophets;4396 let them hear191 them.

30 And he said,2036 No,3780 father3962 Abraham:11 but if1437 one5100 went4198 to them from the dead,3498 they will repent.3340

31 And he said2036 to him, If1487 they hear191 not Moses3475 and the prophets,4396 neither3761 will they be persuaded,3982 though1437 one5100 rose450 from the dead.3498

Chapter 16

1 AND he spoke a parable to his dis ciples, There was a rich man, who had a steward; and they accused him that he was wasting his wealth.

2 So his master called him and said to him, What is this that I hear concerning you? Give me an account of your stewardship; for no longer can you be a steward for me.

3 Then the steward said to himself, What will I do? for my lord will take away from me the stewardship? I cannot dig, and I am ashamed to beg.

4 Now I know what I will do, so that when I leave the stewardship, they will receive me in their houses.

5 And he called his lord's debtors, one by one, and said to the first, How much do you owe my lord?

6 He said to him, A hundred pounds of butter. He said to him, Take your note, sit down quickly, and write fifty pounds.

7 And he said to another, And you, what do you owe to my lord? He said to him, One hundred bushels of wheat. He said to him, Take your note, and sit down and write eighty bushels.

8 And the lord praised the unjust steward because he had done wisely; for the children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light.

9 And I also say, use this earthly wealth, however acquired, to make friends so that when it is gone, they will receive you and you will have everlasting habitation.

10 He who is faithful with little, is also faithful with much; and he who is dishonest with little, is also dishonest with much.

11 If therefore, you are not faithful with the wealth of iniquity, who will believe that there is any truth in you?

12 And if you are not found faithful with that which is not your own, who will give you that which is your own?

13 No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and like the other; or he will honor one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth).

14 When the Pharisees heard all these things, because they loved money, they ridiculed him.

15 But Jesus said to them, You are the ones who make yourselves righteous before men; but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is disgusting in the presence of God.

16 The law and prophets were until John; from that time the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone presses to enter into it.

17 It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one letter of the law to pass away.

18 He who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and he who marries the one who is separated commits adultery.

19 There was a rich man, who used to wear purple and fine linen, and every day he made merry very lavishly.

20 And there was a poor man named Lazarus, who was laid down at that rich man's door, afflicted with boils;

21 He longed to fill his stomach with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's tray; the dogs also came and licked his boils.

22 Now it happened that the poor man died, and the angels carried him into Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.

23 And while he was tormented in Sheol, he lifted up his eyes from a distance, and saw Abraham, with Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he called in a loud voice and said, O my father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and wet my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25 Abraham said to him, My son, remember you received your pleasures when you were living, and Lazarus his hardships; and behold now he is comfortable here, and you are suffering.

26 Besides all these things, a great gulf is fixed between us and you; so that those who wish to cross over from here to you cannot, neither from there to cross over to us.

27 He said to him, If that is so, I beseech you, O my father, to send him to my father's house;

28 For I have five brothers; let him go and testify to them, so that they may not also come to this place of torment.

29 Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the prophets; * let them hear them.

30 But he said to him, No, my father Abraham; but if only a man from the dead go to them, they will repent.

31 Abraham said to him, If they will not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe even if a man should rise from the dead.
