Chapter 6

1 AND in those days, when the number of disciples had increased, the Hel'len-ist converts murmured against the Hebrew converts because their widows were discriminated against in the daily distribution.

2 So the twelve apostles called the whole multitude of the converts and said to them, It is not good that we should leave the word of God and serve food. *

3 Wherefore, brethren, examine and select from among you seven men of good repute who are full of the Spirit of the LORD and of wisdom, so that we may appoint them to this task.

4 And we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.

5 This suggestion pleased the whole people so they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip and Proch'orus and Ni-ca'nor and Ti'mon and Par'menas and Nic'o-las, a proselyte of An'ti-och.

6 These men stood before the apostles: who, as they prayed, laid their hands on them.

7 And the word of God spread; and the number of the converts in Jerusalem increased greatly; and many people of Jewish faith became converts.

8 Now Stephen was full of grace and power and did great wonders and miracles among the people.

9 Then there arose certain men of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Lib'er-tines, and Cy-re'ni-ans and Al-exan'dri- ans and Ci-li'ci-ans and persons from Asia Minor, and they debated with Stephen.

10 But they were unable to stand up against the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke.

11 Then they sent men and instructed them to say, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.

12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they rose up against him and seized him and brought him into the midst of the council.

13 And they appointed false witnesses who said, This man does not cease to speak against the law and against this holy land:

14 For we have heard him say that Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this country and shall change the customs which Moses entrusted to you.

15 Then all who were seated at the council looked at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

1 В те дни, когда число учеников возрастало, иудеи, чьим родным языком был греческий, стали жаловаться на тех иудеев, у которых родным языком был арамейский, потому что их вдовами пренебрегали при каждодневном распределении пищи.

2 Тогда двенадцать апостолов созвали всех последователей и сказали: «Не подобает нам, оставив слово Божье, беспокоиться о пропитании людей,

3 так что выберите, братья и сёстры, из своей среды семерых, пользующихся доброй славой и исполненных Святого Духа и мудрости. Им и поручим эту службу,

4 а себя же посвятим молитве и наставлениям в слове Божьем».

5 Все были довольны этим предложением и избрали Стефана, человека, исполненного веры и Святого Духа, Филиппа, Прохора, Никанора, Тимона, Пармена и Николая Антиохийца, обращённого из язычников.

6 Избранных представили апостолам, и те, помолившись, возложили на них руки.

7 Итак, слово Божье распространялось, число учеников в Иерусалиме весьма возросло, и многие иудейские священники приняли веру и были послушны ей.

8 Стефан же, человек, исполненный благодати и силы, творил великие чудеса и знамения в народе.

9 Но некоторые иудеи из так называемой синагоги либертинцев, иудеи из Киринеи и Александрии, из Киликии и Азии восстали против него. Они долго спорили с ним,

10 но не могли противостоять мудрости и Духу, который говорил через него.

11 Тогда они подкупили некоторых людей, чтобы те сказали: «Мы слышали, как он злословит против Моисея и Бога».

12 Таким образом они возмутили народ, старейшин и законников, и те пришли, схватили его и привели в синедрион.

13 Они также привели лжесвидетелей, которые говорили: «Этот человек непрестанно оскорбляет святое место и Закон.

14 Мы слышали, как он говорил, что Тот Иисус из Назарета разрушит святое место и изменит законы, данные нам Моисеем».

15 Все находившиеся в синедрионе не спускали с него глаз и видели, что его лицо стало словно лицо Ангела.
