Chapter 22

1 BRETHREN and fathers, hear my defense which I now make to you.

2 And when they heard him speak to them in the Hebrew tongue (Aramaic), they were the more quiet: And he said,

3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Ci-li'cia, yet I was brought up in this city under the care and guidance of Ga-ma'li-el, and trained perfectly according to the law of our fathers, and was zealous toward God, just as you are also.

4 And I persecuted this religion to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 The high priest and all the elders can so testify about me, for it was from them that I received letters to go to the brethren at Damascus, to bring those who were there bound to Jerusalem to be punished.

6 And it came to pass as I drew near to Damascus, at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone round about me.

7 And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?

8 And I answered and said, Who are you, my LORD? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Naz'a-reth, whom you persecute.

9 And the men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice that spoke to me.

10 And I said, What shall I do, my LORD? And our LORD said to me, Arise, and go into Da-mas'cus; and there it shall be told to you all things which are appointed for you to do.

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Da-mas'cus.

12 And a certain man, An-a-ni'as, a righteous man according to the law, as testified by all the Jews concerning him,

13 Came to me and said, My brother Saul, receive your sight. And instantly my eyes were opened and I looked upon him.

14 And he said to me, The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice of his mouth.

15 And you shall be a witness for him before all men, of all that you have seen and heard.

16 And now why do you delay? Arise, and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the LORD.

17 And it came to pass that when I returned here to Jerusalem and while praying in the temple,

18 I saw a vision, saying to me, Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive your testimony concerning me.

19 And I said, My LORD, they know that I imprisoned and beat, in every synagogue, those who believed in you:

20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and was in accord with his slayers, and was in charge of the garments of them who stoned him.

21 Then he said to me, Depart: for I will send you afar to preach to the Gentiles.

22 They had given Paul audience up to this word, and then they lifted up their voices, and cried out, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 And as they cried out and cast off their robes, and threw dust into the air,

24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and ordered that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know for what cause they cried so against him.

25 And when they had bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood over him, Is it lawful for you to scourge a Roman citizen who is uncondemned?

26 When the centurion heard that, he went to the chief captain and said, Be careful what you do: for this man is a Roman citizen.

27 Then the captain came and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? Paul said, Yes.

28 And the captain answered and said, I obtained Roman citizenship with a great sum of money. Paul answered, But I was free born to it.

29 Immediately those who were ready to scourge him left him alone, and the captain was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman citizen, because he had bound him.

30 The next day, because he desired to know the truthfulness of the charges which the Jews had brought against Paul, he unbound him and commanded the high priests and all their council to appear before him, and he took Paul and brought him down, and set him before them.

3 «Я иудей, рождённый в Тарсе, в Киликии, но получивший воспитание здесь, в этом городе. Моим наставником был Гамалиил, который тщательно обучил меня закону наших предков. Я был усердным служителем Божьим, таким же, как и вы сегодня.

4 Я подвергал смертельным гонениям последователей Пути, брал под стражу мужчин и женщин и бросал их в темницы.

5 Это могут подтвердить первосвященники и совет старейшин. Именно от них я получил письма к братьям-иудеям в Дамаске, чтобы привести последователей Иисуса в Иерусалим для наказания».

6 «Но вот что приключилось со мной по дороге в Дамаск. Когда я был уже недалеко от этого города, около полудня яркий свет с неба засиял вокруг меня.

7 Я упал на землю и услышал голос, говорящий мне: „Савл, Савл! Почему ты преследуешь Меня?”

8 Я спросил: „Кто ты, Господи?” И голос ответил: „Я — Иисус из Назарета, Которого ты преследуешь”.

9 Те же, кто были со мной, не слышали голоса, но видели свет.

10 Я спросил: „Что мне делать, Господи?” И Господь ответил: „Встань и иди в Дамаск, и там тебе будет сказано, что Я предрешил для тебя”.

11 Я ничего не видел, так как яркий свет ослепил меня, и мои спутники, взяв меня за руку, довели до Дамаска.

12 В Дамаске ко мне пришёл человек по имени Анания, набожный и послушный Закону Моисея, о ком хорошо отзывались все иудеи, живущие там.

13 Он подошёл ко мне и сказал: „Брат Савл! Прозри!” И тотчас же я увидел его.

14 Анания сказал мне: „Бог наших предков избрал тебя узнать его волю, увидеть Праведного и услышать голос из уст Его.

15 Ты будешь свидетелем Ему перед всеми людьми в том, что ты видел и слышал.

16 Так чего же ты ждёшь? Встань и крестись, омой грехи, призывая имя Его ”.

17 Когда я вернулся в Иерусалим, то во время молитвы в храме мне было видение,

18 в котором я увидел Иисуса. Он сказал мне: „Поспеши и немедленно оставь Иерусалим, потому что люди здесь не примут твоё свидетельство обо Мне”.

19 И я ответил: „Господи, эти люди знают, что я ходил по синагогам, хватая и избивая верующих в Тебя.

20 И когда проливалась кровь твоего свидетеля Стефана, я стоял тут же, поощряя это и охраняя одежды убивавших его”.

21 Тогда Всевышний ответил мне: „Иди! Я отправлю тебя далеко, к язычникам”».

22 До этого иудеи слушали Павла, но при этих словах стали кричать: «Смерть ему! Он недостоин жить!»

23 Пока они кричали, сбрасывали с себя верхнюю одежду и бросали пыль в воздух,

24 военный трибун приказал отвести Павла в крепость и высечь плетью. Он хотел подвергнуть Павла допросу, чтобы выяснить, почему иудеи так кричали на него.

25 Но, когда его растянули ремнями, чтобы высечь, Павел сказал стоявшему там центуриону: «Разве по закону без суда бить римского гражданина?»

26 Услышав это, центурион пошёл к трибуну и сказал: «Что вы собираетесь сделать? Ведь этот человек — римский гражданин!»

27 Трибун подошёл к нему и спросил: «Скажи, ты что же — римский гражданин?» «Да», — ответил Павел.

28 Трибун сказал: «Мне стоило больших денег приобрести это гражданство». Павел же произнёс: «А я был рождён гражданином».

29 Те, кто собирались допросить Павла, тут же отступились от него, а начальник испугался, узнав, что связал римского гражданина.

30 На следующий день, желая точно выяснить, в чём иудеи обвиняют Павла, трибун повелел собраться главным священникам и всему синедриону. Сняв с Павла цепи, трибун поставил его перед собранием.

8 And I answered and said, Who are you, my LORD? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Naz'a-reth, whom you persecute.

8 Я спросил: „Кто ты, Господи?” И голос ответил: „Я — Иисус из Назарета, Которого ты преследуешь”.

9 And the men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice that spoke to me.

9 Те же, кто были со мной, не слышали голоса, но видели свет.

10 And I said, What shall I do, my LORD? And our LORD said to me, Arise, and go into Da-mas'cus; and there it shall be told to you all things which are appointed for you to do.

10 Я спросил: „Что мне делать, Господи?” И Господь ответил: „Встань и иди в Дамаск, и там тебе будет сказано, что Я предрешил для тебя”.

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Da-mas'cus.

11 Я ничего не видел, так как яркий свет ослепил меня, и мои спутники, взяв меня за руку, довели до Дамаска.

12 And a certain man, An-a-ni'as, a righteous man according to the law, as testified by all the Jews concerning him,

12 В Дамаске ко мне пришёл человек по имени Анания, набожный и послушный Закону Моисея, о ком хорошо отзывались все иудеи, живущие там.

13 Came to me and said, My brother Saul, receive your sight. And instantly my eyes were opened and I looked upon him.

13 Он подошёл ко мне и сказал: „Брат Савл! Прозри!” И тотчас же я увидел его.

14 And he said to me, The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice of his mouth.

14 Анания сказал мне: „Бог наших предков избрал тебя узнать его волю, увидеть Праведного и услышать голос из уст Его.

15 And you shall be a witness for him before all men, of all that you have seen and heard.

15 Ты будешь свидетелем Ему перед всеми людьми в том, что ты видел и слышал.

16 And now why do you delay? Arise, and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the LORD.

16 Так чего же ты ждёшь? Встань и крестись, омой грехи, призывая имя Его ”.

17 And it came to pass that when I returned here to Jerusalem and while praying in the temple,

17 Когда я вернулся в Иерусалим, то во время молитвы в храме мне было видение,

22 До этого иудеи слушали Павла, но при этих словах стали кричать: «Смерть ему! Он недостоин жить!»

23 Пока они кричали, сбрасывали с себя верхнюю одежду и бросали пыль в воздух,

24 военный трибун приказал отвести Павла в крепость и высечь плетью. Он хотел подвергнуть Павла допросу, чтобы выяснить, почему иудеи так кричали на него.
