Chapter 22

1 BRETHREN and fathers, hear my defense which I now make to you.

2 And when they heard him speak to them in the Hebrew tongue (Aramaic), they were the more quiet: And he said,

3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Ci-li'cia, yet I was brought up in this city under the care and guidance of Ga-ma'li-el, and trained perfectly according to the law of our fathers, and was zealous toward God, just as you are also.

4 And I persecuted this religion to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 The high priest and all the elders can so testify about me, for it was from them that I received letters to go to the brethren at Damascus, to bring those who were there bound to Jerusalem to be punished.

6 And it came to pass as I drew near to Damascus, at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone round about me.

7 And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?

8 And I answered and said, Who are you, my LORD? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Naz'a-reth, whom you persecute.

9 And the men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice that spoke to me.

10 And I said, What shall I do, my LORD? And our LORD said to me, Arise, and go into Da-mas'cus; and there it shall be told to you all things which are appointed for you to do.

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Da-mas'cus.

12 And a certain man, An-a-ni'as, a righteous man according to the law, as testified by all the Jews concerning him,

13 Came to me and said, My brother Saul, receive your sight. And instantly my eyes were opened and I looked upon him.

14 And he said to me, The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice of his mouth.

15 And you shall be a witness for him before all men, of all that you have seen and heard.

16 And now why do you delay? Arise, and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the LORD.

17 And it came to pass that when I returned here to Jerusalem and while praying in the temple,

18 I saw a vision, saying to me, Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive your testimony concerning me.

19 And I said, My LORD, they know that I imprisoned and beat, in every synagogue, those who believed in you:

20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and was in accord with his slayers, and was in charge of the garments of them who stoned him.

21 Then he said to me, Depart: for I will send you afar to preach to the Gentiles.

22 They had given Paul audience up to this word, and then they lifted up their voices, and cried out, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 And as they cried out and cast off their robes, and threw dust into the air,

24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and ordered that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know for what cause they cried so against him.

25 And when they had bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood over him, Is it lawful for you to scourge a Roman citizen who is uncondemned?

26 When the centurion heard that, he went to the chief captain and said, Be careful what you do: for this man is a Roman citizen.

27 Then the captain came and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? Paul said, Yes.

28 And the captain answered and said, I obtained Roman citizenship with a great sum of money. Paul answered, But I was free born to it.

29 Immediately those who were ready to scourge him left him alone, and the captain was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman citizen, because he had bound him.

30 The next day, because he desired to know the truthfulness of the charges which the Jews had brought against Paul, he unbound him and commanded the high priests and all their council to appear before him, and he took Paul and brought him down, and set him before them.

1 Ihr Männer435, liebe Brüder80 und2532 Väter3962, höret191 mein3450 Verantworten627 an4314 euch5209!

2 Da sie aber1161 höreten, daß3754 er846 auf1446 ebräisch zu191 ihnen redete4377, wurden3930 sie noch3123 stiller2271. Und2532 er sprach5346:

3 Ich1473 bin1510 ein jüdischer2453 Mann435, geboren zu3844 Tarsus5019 in1722 Zilizien2791 und1161 erzogen397 in1722 dieser5026 Stadt4172 zu den3303 Füßen4228 Gamaliels1059, gelehret mit allem Fleiß195 im2596 väterlichen3971 Gesetz3551 und war1080 ein Eiferer2207 um GOtt2316, gleichwie2531 ihr5210 alle3956 seid5225 heutigestages4594.

4 Und2532 habe1377 diesen5026 Weg3598 verfolget bis891 an den3739 Tod2288. Ich band1195 sie und5037 überantwortete3860 sie ins1519 Gefängnis5438, beide, Mann435 und2532 Weib1135,

5 wie5613 mir3427 auch2532 der2532 Hohepriester749 und2532 der ganze3956 Haufe der Ältesten4244 Zeugnis gibt3140, von3844 welchen ich Briefe1992 nahm1209 an4314 die3739 Brüder80, und2532 reisete gen1519 Damaskus1154, daß2443 ich, die daselbst1566 waren5607, gebunden1210 führete gen1519 Jerusalem2419, daß sie3140 gepeiniget würden5097.

6 Es geschah1096 aber1161, da1448 ich1691 hinzog4198 und2532 nahe an4012 Damaskus1154 kam, um4012 den Mittag3314, umblickte mich3427 schnell1810 ein großes2425 Licht5457 vom1537 Himmel3772.

7 Und5037 ich fiel4098 zum Erdboden1475 und2532 hörete eine Stimme5456, die sprach3004 zu1519 mir3165: Saul4549, Saul4549, was5101 verfolgest du191 mich3427?

8 Ich1473 antwortete611 aber1161: HErr2962, wer5101 bist du1488? Und5037 er sprach2036 zu4314 mir3165: Ich1473 bin1510 JEsus2424 von Nazareth3480, den3739 du4771 verfolgest.

9 Die191 aber1161 mit4862 mir1698 waren, sahen2300 das5607 Licht5457 und3303 erschraken1096; die Stimme5456 aber1161 des, der mit mir3427 redete2980, höreten sie nicht2532.

10 Ich2980 sprach2036 aber1161: HErr2962, was5101 soll ich tun4160? Der HErr2962 aber1161 sprach2036 zu4314 mir3165: Stehe auf450 und gehe4198 gen Damaskus1154; da2546 wird man dir4671 sagen von4012 allem3956, was3739 dir4671 zu1519 tun4160 verordnet5021 ist.

11 Als ich aber1161 vor Klarheit1391 dieses Lichtes5457 nicht3756 sehen konnte1689, ward ich bei5613 der1565 Hand geleitet5496 von575 denen, die mit5259 mir3427 waren4895, und kam2064 gen1519 Damaskus1154.

12 Es war aber1161 ein5100 gottesfürchtiger2152 Mann435 nach2596 dem Gesetz3551, Ananias367, der5259 ein gut Gerücht3140 hatte bei allen3956 Juden2453, die daselbst wohneten.

13 Der846 kam2064 zu4314 mir3165 und2532 trat vor mich3427 hin und2504 sprach2036 zu2186 mir: Saul4549, lieber Bruder80, siehe auf308! Und2504 ich sah ihn846 an zu1519 derselbigen Stunde5610.

14 Er846 aber1161 sprach2036: Der GOtt2316 unserer2257 Väter3962 hat4400 dich4571 verordnet, daß du seinen Willen2307 erkennen1097 solltest und2532 sehen1492 den Gerechten1342 und2532 hören191, die Stimme5456 aus1537 seinem Munde4750.

15 Denn3754 du191 wirst sein2071 Zeuge3144 zu4314 allen Menschen444 sein des846, das3956 du gesehen3708 und2532 gehöret hast.

16 Und2532 nun3568, was5101 verziehst du3195? Stehe auf450 und2532 laß dich taufen907 und abwaschen628 deine4675 Sünden266 und rufe an1941 den Namen3686 des HErrn2962.

17 Es geschah1096 aber1161, da1722 ich3427 wieder5290 gen1519 Jerusalem2419 kam und2532 betete4336 im1722 Tempel2411, daß3165 ich3450 entzücket ward1096 und sah ihn.

18 Da2532 sprach3004 er846 zu1722 mir3427: Eile4692 und2532 mache dich behend von1537 Jerusalem2419 hinaus1831: denn1360 sie1492 werden3858 nicht3756 aufnehmen dein4675 Zeugnis3141 von4012 mir1700.

19 Und2504 ich1473 sprach2036: HErr2962, sie846 wissen1987 selbst, daß3754 ich2252 gefangenlegte und2532 stäupte1194 die, so an1909 dich4571 glaubten4100, in den2596 Schulen4864 hin und wieder.

20 Und2532 da3753 das Blut129 des846 Stephanus4736, deines4675 Zeugen3144, vergossen ward1632, stund ich2252 auch daneben und hatte Wohlgefallen4909 an seinem Tode336 und verwahrete denen die846 Kleider2440, die ihn846 töteten337.

21 Und2532 er sprach2036 zu4314 mir3165: Gehe hin4198; denn3754 ich1473 will1821 dich4571 ferne3112 unter1519 die Heiden1484 senden.

22 Sie846 höreten ihm aber1161 zu191 bis891 auf1869 dies5127 Wort3056 und2532 huben ihre Stimme5456 auf142 und sprachen3004: Hinweg mit solchem5108 von575 der Erde1093; denn1063 es ist2520 nicht3756 billig, daß er846 leben2198 soll!

23 Da sie aber1161 schrieen2905 und2532 ihre Kleider2440 abwarfen4495 und2532 den Staub2868 in1519 die Luft109 warfen906,

24 hieß ihn846 der Hauptmann5506 in1519 das Lager3925 führen71 und sagte2036, daß2443 man ihn846 stäupen3148 und ertragen sollte426, daß er846 erführe1921 um welcher Ursache156 willen sie2753 also3779 über2019 ihn riefen.

25 Als er846 ihn aber1161 mit Riemen2438 anband4385, sprach2036 Paulus3972 zu4314 dem Unterhauptmann1543, der dabeistund: Ist‘s2476 auch recht1832 bei5613 euch5213, einen römischen4514 Menschen444 ohne Urteil178 und2532 Recht geißeln3147?

26 Da das der Unterhauptmann1543 hörete, ging er3778 zu4334 dem Oberhauptmann5506 und1161 verkündigte518 ihm und1063 sprach3004: Was5101 willst3708 du191 machen3195? Dieser Mensch444 ist2076 römisch4514.

27 Da kam zu4334 ihm der Oberhauptmann5506 und sprach2036 zu ihm: Sage5346 mir, bist1488 du4771 römisch? Er846 aber1161 sprach3004: Ja3483.

28 Und5037 der Oberhauptmann5506 antwortete611: Ich1473 habe2932 dies5026 Bürgerrecht4174 mit großer4183 Summe2774 zuwege gebracht. Paulus3972 aber1161 sprach5346: Ich aber1161 bin auch2532 römisch geboren1080.

29 Da3767 traten alsbald von575 ihm ab868, die3588 ihn befragen426 sollten3195. Und1161 der Oberhauptmann5506 fürchtete sich, da2532 er846 vernahm1921, daß3754 er römisch4514 war2258, und2532 er ihn gebunden1210 hatte.
