Chapter 22

1 BRETHREN and fathers, hear my defense which I now make to you.

2 And when they heard him speak to them in the Hebrew tongue (Aramaic), they were the more quiet: And he said,

3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Ci-li'cia, yet I was brought up in this city under the care and guidance of Ga-ma'li-el, and trained perfectly according to the law of our fathers, and was zealous toward God, just as you are also.

4 And I persecuted this religion to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 The high priest and all the elders can so testify about me, for it was from them that I received letters to go to the brethren at Damascus, to bring those who were there bound to Jerusalem to be punished.

6 And it came to pass as I drew near to Damascus, at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone round about me.

7 And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?

8 And I answered and said, Who are you, my LORD? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Naz'a-reth, whom you persecute.

9 And the men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice that spoke to me.

10 And I said, What shall I do, my LORD? And our LORD said to me, Arise, and go into Da-mas'cus; and there it shall be told to you all things which are appointed for you to do.

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Da-mas'cus.

12 And a certain man, An-a-ni'as, a righteous man according to the law, as testified by all the Jews concerning him,

13 Came to me and said, My brother Saul, receive your sight. And instantly my eyes were opened and I looked upon him.

14 And he said to me, The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice of his mouth.

15 And you shall be a witness for him before all men, of all that you have seen and heard.

16 And now why do you delay? Arise, and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the LORD.

17 And it came to pass that when I returned here to Jerusalem and while praying in the temple,

18 I saw a vision, saying to me, Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive your testimony concerning me.

19 And I said, My LORD, they know that I imprisoned and beat, in every synagogue, those who believed in you:

20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and was in accord with his slayers, and was in charge of the garments of them who stoned him.

21 Then he said to me, Depart: for I will send you afar to preach to the Gentiles.

22 They had given Paul audience up to this word, and then they lifted up their voices, and cried out, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 And as they cried out and cast off their robes, and threw dust into the air,

24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and ordered that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know for what cause they cried so against him.

25 And when they had bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood over him, Is it lawful for you to scourge a Roman citizen who is uncondemned?

26 When the centurion heard that, he went to the chief captain and said, Be careful what you do: for this man is a Roman citizen.

27 Then the captain came and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? Paul said, Yes.

28 And the captain answered and said, I obtained Roman citizenship with a great sum of money. Paul answered, But I was free born to it.

29 Immediately those who were ready to scourge him left him alone, and the captain was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman citizen, because he had bound him.

30 The next day, because he desired to know the truthfulness of the charges which the Jews had brought against Paul, he unbound him and commanded the high priests and all their council to appear before him, and he took Paul and brought him down, and set him before them.

2 Когда они услышали, что он говорит по-арамейски, они и вовсе утихли.

3 «Я иудей, — продолжал Павел, — родился в городе Тарсе, что в Киликии. Воспитывался я в этом городе, учился у Гамалиила и был научен строгому исполнению отеческого Закона. И с таким же рвением служил Богу, как и вы сегодня.

4 Я преследовал и смерти предавал всех приверженцев этого Пути как ложного учения, связывал и бросал в тюрьмы как мужчин, так и женщин,

5 свидетели мне в том — первосвященник и весь совет старейшин. У них я взял письма к братьям в Дамаск и отправился туда, чтобы оттуда всех сторонников этого нового учения вести как узников для наказания в Иерусалим.

6 И вот что произошло со мной на пути: когда я приближался к Дамаску, около полудня внезапно меня озарил яркий свет с неба.

7 Я упал на землю и услышал голос, говоривший мне: „Саул, Саул, что ты гонишь Меня?“

8 „Кто ты, Господи?“ — спросил я. „Я Иисус Назарянин, Которого ты преследуешь“, — ответил Он мне.

9 Спутники мои свет видели, но голоса, говорившего мне, не слышали.

10 „Что мне делать, Господи?“ — спросил я. „Встань и иди в Дамаск! — ответил мне Господь. — Там скажут тебе всё, что тебе надлежит сделать“.

11 От яркости света того я ослеп, и спутники мои за руку привели меня в Дамаск.

12 Некий Анания, человек, свято соблюдающий Закон и глубоко уважаемый всеми иудеями, живущими в Дамаске,

13 пришел ко мне. Он стал рядом и сказал: „Брат Саул, пусть же вернется к тебе зрение“. И тотчас открылись глаза мои, так что смог я видеть его.

14 Он же продолжил: „Богом отцов наших суждено тебе узнать волю Его, увидеть Праведника и услышать голос из Его уст

15 для того, чтобы ты стал свидетелем Его перед всеми людьми и поведал им о том, что ты видел и слышал.

16 Тогда к чему же медлить? Встань, прими крещение и, призвав имя Его, омой грехи твои“.

17 Когда же я возвратился в Иерусалим и молился в Храме, мне было видение.

18 Увидел я Его, говорящего мне: „Поспеши покинуть Иерусалим и сделай это немедленно, потому что не примут они твое свидетельство обо Мне“.

19 „Господи! — ответил я. — Они же знают, что я шел из синагоги в синагогу, заточая в тюрьмы и избивая верующих в Тебя,

20 а когда проливалась кровь свидетеля Твоего Стефана, я, одобряя это, тоже стоял там и стерег одежды убивавших его“.

21 Тогда Господь сказал мне: „Иди! Я пошлю тебя далеко, к язычникам“».

22 Его слушали до тех пор, пока он не сказал этого, но тут подняли крик: «Пора кончать с ним! Нельзя его оставлять в живых!»

23 Они кричали, размахивали одеждами, пригоршнями бросали пыль в воздух.

24 Тогда трибун велел увести Павла в крепость и приказал сечь его плетьми, чтобы дознаться, по какой причине на него так яростно кричали.

25 Когда же его для бичевания привязали ремнями, Павел спросил у находившегося при этом центуриона: «Имеете ли вы право бичевать римского гражданина, да к тому же без суда и следствия?»

26 Услышав это, центурион пошел к трибуну и сказал ему: «Что ты собираешься делать? Ведь человек этот — римский гражданин».

27 Трибун пришел к Павлу и спросил его: «Скажи мне, ты на самом деле римский гражданин?» «Да», — ответил Павел.

28 «Мне же, — удивленно заметил трибун, — это гражданство стоило больших денег». «А я родился римским гражданином», — сказал Павел.

29 Собравшиеся пытать его тотчас же подались назад, и сам трибун испугался, узнав, что заковал в цепи римского гражданина.

30 На следующий день, желая выяснить, в чем иудеи обвиняют Павла, трибун велел снять с него цепи и приказал собрать первосвященников и весь Синедрион, а затем вывел Павла и поставил его перед ними.

1 BRETHREN and fathers, hear my defense which I now make to you.

1 «Братья и отцы! Послушайте, что хотел бы я сказать вам сейчас в свое оправдание».

2 And when they heard him speak to them in the Hebrew tongue (Aramaic), they were the more quiet: And he said,

3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Ci-li'cia, yet I was brought up in this city under the care and guidance of Ga-ma'li-el, and trained perfectly according to the law of our fathers, and was zealous toward God, just as you are also.

3 «Я иудей, — продолжал Павел, — родился в городе Тарсе, что в Киликии. Воспитывался я в этом городе, учился у Гамалиила и был научен строгому исполнению отеческого Закона. И с таким же рвением служил Богу, как и вы сегодня.

4 And I persecuted this religion to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

4 Я преследовал и смерти предавал всех приверженцев этого Пути как ложного учения, связывал и бросал в тюрьмы как мужчин, так и женщин,

5 The high priest and all the elders can so testify about me, for it was from them that I received letters to go to the brethren at Damascus, to bring those who were there bound to Jerusalem to be punished.

5 свидетели мне в том — первосвященник и весь совет старейшин. У них я взял письма к братьям в Дамаск и отправился туда, чтобы оттуда всех сторонников этого нового учения вести как узников для наказания в Иерусалим.

6 And it came to pass as I drew near to Damascus, at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone round about me.

6 И вот что произошло со мной на пути: когда я приближался к Дамаску, около полудня внезапно меня озарил яркий свет с неба.

7 And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?

7 Я упал на землю и услышал голос, говоривший мне: „Саул, Саул, что ты гонишь Меня?“

8 And I answered and said, Who are you, my LORD? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Naz'a-reth, whom you persecute.

8 „Кто ты, Господи?“ — спросил я. „Я Иисус Назарянин, Которого ты преследуешь“, — ответил Он мне.

9 And the men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice that spoke to me.

9 Спутники мои свет видели, но голоса, говорившего мне, не слышали.

10 And I said, What shall I do, my LORD? And our LORD said to me, Arise, and go into Da-mas'cus; and there it shall be told to you all things which are appointed for you to do.

10 „Что мне делать, Господи?“ — спросил я. „Встань и иди в Дамаск! — ответил мне Господь. — Там скажут тебе всё, что тебе надлежит сделать“.

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Da-mas'cus.

11 От яркости света того я ослеп, и спутники мои за руку привели меня в Дамаск.

12 And a certain man, An-a-ni'as, a righteous man according to the law, as testified by all the Jews concerning him,

12 Некий Анания, человек, свято соблюдающий Закон и глубоко уважаемый всеми иудеями, живущими в Дамаске,

13 Came to me and said, My brother Saul, receive your sight. And instantly my eyes were opened and I looked upon him.

13 пришел ко мне. Он стал рядом и сказал: „Брат Саул, пусть же вернется к тебе зрение“. И тотчас открылись глаза мои, так что смог я видеть его.

14 And he said to me, The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice of his mouth.

14 Он же продолжил: „Богом отцов наших суждено тебе узнать волю Его, увидеть Праведника и услышать голос из Его уст

15 And you shall be a witness for him before all men, of all that you have seen and heard.

15 для того, чтобы ты стал свидетелем Его перед всеми людьми и поведал им о том, что ты видел и слышал.

16 And now why do you delay? Arise, and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the LORD.

16 Тогда к чему же медлить? Встань, прими крещение и, призвав имя Его, омой грехи твои“.

17 And it came to pass that when I returned here to Jerusalem and while praying in the temple,

17 Когда же я возвратился в Иерусалим и молился в Храме, мне было видение.

18 I saw a vision, saying to me, Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive your testimony concerning me.

18 Увидел я Его, говорящего мне: „Поспеши покинуть Иерусалим и сделай это немедленно, потому что не примут они твое свидетельство обо Мне“.

19 And I said, My LORD, they know that I imprisoned and beat, in every synagogue, those who believed in you:

19 „Господи! — ответил я. — Они же знают, что я шел из синагоги в синагогу, заточая в тюрьмы и избивая верующих в Тебя,

21 Тогда Господь сказал мне: „Иди! Я пошлю тебя далеко, к язычникам“».

22 Его слушали до тех пор, пока он не сказал этого, но тут подняли крик: «Пора кончать с ним! Нельзя его оставлять в живых!»

23 Они кричали, размахивали одеждами, пригоршнями бросали пыль в воздух.
