Chapter 44

1 AND he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with wheat, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth.

2 And take my cup, the silver cup, and put it in the sack's mouth of the youngest, with his money for the wheat. And the servant did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

3 As soon as the morning was light, the men started on their way, together with their asses.

4 And when they were gone out of the city, but not yet far off, Joseph said to the steward, Arise, pursue the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, Why have you returned evil for good?

5 This is the cup from which my lord drinks, and by which indeed he divines. You have done evil in so doing.

6 And he overtook them, and he spoke to them these same words.

7 They said to him, Let not our lord speak such words. Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing;

8 Behold, the money which we found in our sacks' mouths we brought back to you from the land of Canaan; how then should we steal from your master's house gold or silver?

9 With whomsoever of your servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be to our lord servants.

10 And he said to them, Now also let it be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and the rest of you shall be blameless.

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

12 And they searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

13 And they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his ass, and returned to the town.

14 And Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house; for he was still there; and they fell before him on the ground.

15 And Joseph said to them, What deed is this that you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly divine?

16 And Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 And he said to them, Far be it from me that I should do such a thing; only the man with whom the cup has been found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, go up in peace to your father.

18 Then Judah came near to him and said, I beg you, O my lord, let your servant speak a few words in my lord's presence, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have you a father, or a brother?

20 And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and he has a young son, the child of his old age; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

21 Then you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him.

22 And we said to my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

23 And you said to your servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.

24 And when we came up to your servant our father, we told him the words of my lord.

25 And your servant our father said to us, Go back again and buy us a little grain.

26 And we said to our father, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother goes down with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.

27 Then your servant our father said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons;

28 And the one of them left me, and I said, Surely he has been killed; and I have never seen him since;

29 And now you want to take this one also from me, and if misfortune should befall him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

30 Now therefore when we come to your servant our father, and the lad is not with us; seeing that his life is dear to him like his own life;

31 It shall come to pass when he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die; and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.

32 For your servant became surety for the lad to our father, saying, If l do not bring him back to you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever.

33 Now therefore, let your servant stay here instead of the lad as a servant to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.

34 For how can I go up to my father, if the lad is not with me? Lest I see the misfortune which will come on my father.

1 Потом дал он управляющему домом его приказание, говоря: наполни мешки их хлебом, сколько они могут нести, а серебро каждого положи в отверстие мешка его.

2 И чашу мою, чашу серебряную, положи в отверстие мешка младшему, вместе с его серебром за хлеб. Он исполнил сие точно так, как Иосиф приказал.

3 Поутру, когда рассвело, они отпущены сами, и ослы их.

4 Еще не далеко отошли они от города, как Иосиф сказал управляющему домом своим: ступай, догоняй сих людей, и, когда догонишь, скажи им: для чего вы платите злом за добро?

5 Не та ли это чаша, из которой пьет господин мой? он, конечно, догадается об ней. Худо это вы сделали.

6 Он догнал их, и сказал им сии самые слова.

7 Они отвечали ему: для чего господин наш говорит такия слова? Нет, рабы твои не сделают того, о чем ты говоришь.

8 Вот серебро найденное нами в отверстиях мешков наших, мы обратно принесли тебе из земли Ханаанской: как же нам украсть из дома господина твоего серебро или золото?

9 У кого из рабов твоих найдется, тому смерть, а мы будем рабами господину нашему.

10 Он сказал: хорошо; как вы сказали, так пусть и будет: у кого найдется, тот будет мне раб, а вы будете невиноваты.

11 Тогда они тотчас сняли мешки свои на землю, и открыли каждый свой мешок.

12 Он обыскал, начав со старшего и окончив младшим. Чаша нашлась в мешке Вениаминовом,

13 Они разодрали одежды свои, и, возложив на ослов своих бремена, возвратились в город.

14 И пришли, Иуда и братья его, в дом Иосифа, который был еще дома, и пали пред ним на землю.

15 Иосиф сказал им: как это вы сделали такое дело? неужели вы не знали, что такой человек, как я, точно угадает?

16 Иуда отвечал: что сказать господину нашему? что отвечать? чем оправдываться? Бог нашел неправду рабов твоих; вот, мы рабы господину нашему, и мы, и тот, в чьих руках нашлась чаша.

17 Но он сказал: нет, я этого не сделаю; тот, в чьих руках нашлась чаша, будет мне раб, а вы подите с миром к отцу вашему.

18 Тогда Иуда подошел к нему, и сказал: сделай милость, господин мой, позволь рабу твоему сказать слово во уши господина моего, и не прогневайся на раба твоего; ибо ты то же, что Фараон.

19 Господин мой спрашивал рабов своих, говоря: есть ли у вас отец или брат?

20 Мы сказали господину нашему, что у нас есть отец престарелый, и младший брат, сын старости; брат его умер; он остался один от матери своей, и отец любит его.

21 На сие ты сказал рабам твоим: приведите его ко мне, чтобы мне видеть его.

22 Мы отвечали господину нашему, что отрок не может оставить отца своего, и что если он оставит отца своего, то сей умрет.

23 Но ты сказал рабам твоим: если не придет с вами меньший брат ваш, то вы более не увидите лица моего.

24 Итак, когда мы пришли к рабу твоему, отцу моему, то пересказали ему слова господина моего.

25 И когда наш отец сказал: подите опять, купите нам немного хлеба;

26 То мы отвечали: нельзя нам идти; а если с нами будет меньший брат наш, то пойдем; потому что нельзя нам видеть лица того человека, если не будет с нами меньшего брата нашего.

27 На сие раб твой, мой отец, сказал нам: вы знаете, что жена моя родила мне двух сынов.

28 Один пошел от меня, и я сказал: верно, он растерзан; и не вижу его доныне.

29 Если и сего возьмете от глаз моих, и случится с ним беда: то вы сведете седину мою с горестью в Шеол.

30 Теперь если я пойду к рабу твоему, моему отцу, и не будет с нами отрока, с душею которого связана душа его:

31 То он, как скоро увидит, что нет отрока, умрет; и таким образом рабы твои сведут седину раба твоего, отца нашего, в Шеол.

32 Притом я, раб твой, обязался отвечать за отрока отцу моему, сказав: если не приведу его к тебе, то пусть буду виновен пред отцем моим на всю жизнь.

33 Итак, позволь мне, рабу твоему, вместо отрока, остаться в рабстве у господина моего; а отрок пусть идет с братьями своими.

34 Ибо, как я пойду к отцу моему, если отрока не будет со мною? чтоб мне не увидеть бедствия, которое постигнет отца моего.

1 Потом дал он управляющему домом его приказание, говоря: наполни мешки их хлебом, сколько они могут нести, а серебро каждого положи в отверстие мешка его.

2 And take my cup, the silver cup, and put it in the sack's mouth of the youngest, with his money for the wheat. And the servant did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

2 И чашу мою, чашу серебряную, положи в отверстие мешка младшему, вместе с его серебром за хлеб. Он исполнил сие точно так, как Иосиф приказал.

3 As soon as the morning was light, the men started on their way, together with their asses.

3 Поутру, когда рассвело, они отпущены сами, и ослы их.

4 And when they were gone out of the city, but not yet far off, Joseph said to the steward, Arise, pursue the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, Why have you returned evil for good?

4 Еще не далеко отошли они от города, как Иосиф сказал управляющему домом своим: ступай, догоняй сих людей, и, когда догонишь, скажи им: для чего вы платите злом за добро?

5 This is the cup from which my lord drinks, and by which indeed he divines. You have done evil in so doing.

5 Не та ли это чаша, из которой пьет господин мой? он, конечно, догадается об ней. Худо это вы сделали.

6 And he overtook them, and he spoke to them these same words.

6 Он догнал их, и сказал им сии самые слова.

7 They said to him, Let not our lord speak such words. Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing;

7 Они отвечали ему: для чего господин наш говорит такия слова? Нет, рабы твои не сделают того, о чем ты говоришь.

8 Behold, the money which we found in our sacks' mouths we brought back to you from the land of Canaan; how then should we steal from your master's house gold or silver?

8 Вот серебро найденное нами в отверстиях мешков наших, мы обратно принесли тебе из земли Ханаанской: как же нам украсть из дома господина твоего серебро или золото?

9 With whomsoever of your servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be to our lord servants.

9 У кого из рабов твоих найдется, тому смерть, а мы будем рабами господину нашему.

10 And he said to them, Now also let it be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and the rest of you shall be blameless.

10 Он сказал: хорошо; как вы сказали, так пусть и будет: у кого найдется, тот будет мне раб, а вы будете невиноваты.

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

11 Тогда они тотчас сняли мешки свои на землю, и открыли каждый свой мешок.

12 And they searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

12 Он обыскал, начав со старшего и окончив младшим. Чаша нашлась в мешке Вениаминовом,

13 And they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his ass, and returned to the town.

13 Они разодрали одежды свои, и, возложив на ослов своих бремена, возвратились в город.

14 And Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house; for he was still there; and they fell before him on the ground.

14 И пришли, Иуда и братья его, в дом Иосифа, который был еще дома, и пали пред ним на землю.

15 And Joseph said to them, What deed is this that you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly divine?

15 Иосиф сказал им: как это вы сделали такое дело? неужели вы не знали, что такой человек, как я, точно угадает?

16 And Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

16 Иуда отвечал: что сказать господину нашему? что отвечать? чем оправдываться? Бог нашел неправду рабов твоих; вот, мы рабы господину нашему, и мы, и тот, в чьих руках нашлась чаша.

17 And he said to them, Far be it from me that I should do such a thing; only the man with whom the cup has been found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, go up in peace to your father.

17 Но он сказал: нет, я этого не сделаю; тот, в чьих руках нашлась чаша, будет мне раб, а вы подите с миром к отцу вашему.

18 Then Judah came near to him and said, I beg you, O my lord, let your servant speak a few words in my lord's presence, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh.

18 Тогда Иуда подошел к нему, и сказал: сделай милость, господин мой, позволь рабу твоему сказать слово во уши господина моего, и не прогневайся на раба твоего; ибо ты то же, что Фараон.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have you a father, or a brother?

19 Господин мой спрашивал рабов своих, говоря: есть ли у вас отец или брат?

20 And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and he has a young son, the child of his old age; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

20 Мы сказали господину нашему, что у нас есть отец престарелый, и младший брат, сын старости; брат его умер; он остался один от матери своей, и отец любит его.

21 Then you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him.

21 На сие ты сказал рабам твоим: приведите его ко мне, чтобы мне видеть его.

22 And we said to my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

22 Мы отвечали господину нашему, что отрок не может оставить отца своего, и что если он оставит отца своего, то сей умрет.

23 And you said to your servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.

23 Но ты сказал рабам твоим: если не придет с вами меньший брат ваш, то вы более не увидите лица моего.

24 And when we came up to your servant our father, we told him the words of my lord.

24 Итак, когда мы пришли к рабу твоему, отцу моему, то пересказали ему слова господина моего.

25 And your servant our father said to us, Go back again and buy us a little grain.

25 И когда наш отец сказал: подите опять, купите нам немного хлеба;

26 And we said to our father, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother goes down with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.

26 То мы отвечали: нельзя нам идти; а если с нами будет меньший брат наш, то пойдем; потому что нельзя нам видеть лица того человека, если не будет с нами меньшего брата нашего.

27 Then your servant our father said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons;

27 На сие раб твой, мой отец, сказал нам: вы знаете, что жена моя родила мне двух сынов.

30 Теперь если я пойду к рабу твоему, моему отцу, и не будет с нами отрока, с душею которого связана душа его:

31 То он, как скоро увидит, что нет отрока, умрет; и таким образом рабы твои сведут седину раба твоего, отца нашего, в Шеол.

32 Притом я, раб твой, обязался отвечать за отрока отцу моему, сказав: если не приведу его к тебе, то пусть буду виновен пред отцем моим на всю жизнь.

33 Итак, позволь мне, рабу твоему, вместо отрока, остаться в рабстве у господина моего; а отрок пусть идет с братьями своими.

34 For how can I go up to my father, if the lad is not with me? Lest I see the misfortune which will come on my father.

34 Ибо, как я пойду к отцу моему, если отрока не будет со мною? чтоб мне не увидеть бедствия, которое постигнет отца моего.
