Chapter 44

1 AND he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with wheat, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth.

2 And take my cup, the silver cup, and put it in the sack's mouth of the youngest, with his money for the wheat. And the servant did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

3 As soon as the morning was light, the men started on their way, together with their asses.

4 And when they were gone out of the city, but not yet far off, Joseph said to the steward, Arise, pursue the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, Why have you returned evil for good?

5 This is the cup from which my lord drinks, and by which indeed he divines. You have done evil in so doing.

6 And he overtook them, and he spoke to them these same words.

7 They said to him, Let not our lord speak such words. Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing;

8 Behold, the money which we found in our sacks' mouths we brought back to you from the land of Canaan; how then should we steal from your master's house gold or silver?

9 With whomsoever of your servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be to our lord servants.

10 And he said to them, Now also let it be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and the rest of you shall be blameless.

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

12 And they searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

13 And they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his ass, and returned to the town.

14 And Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house; for he was still there; and they fell before him on the ground.

15 And Joseph said to them, What deed is this that you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly divine?

16 And Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 And he said to them, Far be it from me that I should do such a thing; only the man with whom the cup has been found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, go up in peace to your father.

18 Then Judah came near to him and said, I beg you, O my lord, let your servant speak a few words in my lord's presence, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have you a father, or a brother?

20 And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and he has a young son, the child of his old age; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

21 Then you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him.

22 And we said to my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

23 And you said to your servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.

24 And when we came up to your servant our father, we told him the words of my lord.

25 And your servant our father said to us, Go back again and buy us a little grain.

26 And we said to our father, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother goes down with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.

27 Then your servant our father said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons;

28 And the one of them left me, and I said, Surely he has been killed; and I have never seen him since;

29 And now you want to take this one also from me, and if misfortune should befall him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

30 Now therefore when we come to your servant our father, and the lad is not with us; seeing that his life is dear to him like his own life;

31 It shall come to pass when he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die; and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.

32 For your servant became surety for the lad to our father, saying, If l do not bring him back to you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever.

33 Now therefore, let your servant stay here instead of the lad as a servant to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.

34 For how can I go up to my father, if the lad is not with me? Lest I see the misfortune which will come on my father.

Chapter 44

1 And he commanded6680 the steward834 5921 of his house,1004 saying,559 Fill4390 the men's582 sacks572 with food,400 as much834 as they can3201 carry,5375 and put7760 every man's376 money3701 in his sack's572 mouth.6310

2 And put7760 my cup,1375 the silver3701 cup,1375 in the sack's572 mouth6310 of the youngest,6996 and his corn7668 money.3701 And he did6213 according to the word1697 that Joseph3130 had spoken.1696

3 As soon as the morning1242 was light,216 the men582 were sent7971 away, they and their asses.2543

4 And when they were gone3318 out of the city,5892 and not yet far7368 off, Joseph3130 said559 to his steward,834 5921 Up, follow7291 after310 the men;582 and when you do overtake5381 them, say559 to them, Why4100 have you rewarded7999 evil7451 for good?2896

5 Is not this2088 it in which834 my lord113 drinks,8354 and whereby indeed he divines?5172 you have done evil7489 in so834 doing.6213

6 And he overtook5381 them, and he spoke1696 to them these411 same words.1697

7 And they said559 to him, Why4100 said1696 my lord113 these428 words?1697 God forbid2486 that your servants5650 should do6213 according to this2088 thing:1697

8 Behold,2005 the money,3701 which834 we found4672 in our sacks' 572mouths,6310 we brought7725 again7725 to you out of the land776 of Canaan:3667 how349 then should we steal1589 out of your lord's113 house1004 silver3701 or176 gold?2091

9 With whomsoever834 of your servants5650 it be found,4672 both let him die,4191 and we also1571 will be my lord's113 slaves.5650

10 And he said,559 Now6258 also1571 let it be according to your words:1697 he with whom834 it is found4672 shall be my servant;5650 and you shall be blameless.5355

11 Then they speedily4116 took3381 down3381 every man376 his sack572 to the ground,776 and opened6605 every man376 his sack.572

12 And he searched,2664 and began2490 at the oldest,1419 and left3615 at the youngest:6996 and the cup1375 was found4672 in Benjamin's1144 sack.572

13 Then they rent7167 their clothes,8071 and laded6006 every man376 his ass,2543 and returned7725 to the city.5892

14 And Judah3063 and his brothers251 came935 to Joseph's3130 house;1004 for he was yet5750 there:8033 and they fell5307 before6440 him on the ground.776

15 And Joseph3130 said559 to them, What4100 deed4639 is this2088 that you have done?6213 know3045 you not that such a man376 as I can certainly divine?5172

16 And Judah3063 said,559 What4100 shall we say559 to my lord?113 what4100 shall we speak?1696 or how4100 shall we clear6663 ourselves? God430 has found4672 out the iniquity5771 of your servants:5650 behold,2009 we are my lord's113 servants,5650 both1571 we, and he also1571 with whom834 the cup1375 is found.4672

17 And he said,559 God forbid2486 that I should do6213 so:2063 but the man376 in whose hand3027 the cup1375 is found,4672 he shall be my servant;5650 and as for you, get5927 you up in peace7965 to your father.1

18 Then Judah3063 came5066 near5066 to him, and said,559 Oh994 my lord,113 let your servant,5650 I pray4994 you, speak1696 a word1697 in my lord's113 ears,241 and let not your anger639 burn2734 against your servant:5650 for you are even as Pharaoh.6547

19 My lord113 asked7592 his servants,5650 saying,559 Have3426 you a father,1 or176 a brother?251

20 And we said559 to my lord,113 We have3426 a father,1 an old2205 man,376 and a child3206 of his old2208 age, a little6996 one; and his brother251 is dead,4191 and he alone905 is left3498 of his mother,517 and his father1 loves157 him.

21 And you said559 to your servants,5650 Bring3381 him down3381 to me, that I may set7760 my eyes5869 on him.

22 And we said559 to my lord,113 The lad5288 cannot3808 3201 leave5800 his father:1 for if he should leave5800 his father,1 his father would die.4191

23 And you said559 to your servants,5650 Except518 3808 your youngest6996 brother251 come3381 down3381 with you, you shall see7200 my face6440 no3808 more.3254

24 And it came1961 to pass when3588 we came5927 up to your servant5650 my father,1 we told5046 him the words1697 of my lord.113

25 And our father1 said,559 Go7725 again,7725 and buy7666 us a little4592 food.400

26 And we said,559 We cannot3808 3201 go3381 down:3381 if518 our youngest6996 brother251 be with us, then will we go3381 down:3381 for we may3201 not see7200 the man's376 face,6440 except369 our youngest6996 brother251 be with us.

27 And your servant5650 my father1 said559 to us, You know3045 that my wife802 bore3205 me two8147 sons:

28 And the one259 went3318 out from me, and I said,559 Surely389 he is torn2963 in pieces; and I saw7200 him not since:2008

29 And if518 you take3947 this2088 also1571 from me, and mischief611 befall7136 him, you shall bring3381 down3381 my gray7872 hairs with sorrow7451 to the grave.7585

30 Now6258 therefore when I come935 to your servant5650 my father,1 and the lad5288 be not with us; seeing that his life5315 is bound7194 up in the lad's5288 life;5315

31 It shall come1961 to pass, when he sees7200 that the lad5288 is not with us, that he will die:4191 and your servants5650 shall bring3381 down3381 the gray7872 hairs of your servant5650 our father1 with sorrow3015 to the grave.7585

32 For your servant5650 became6148 surety6148 for the lad5288 to my father,1 saying,559 If518 I bring935 him not to you, then I shall bear2398 the blame2398 to my father1 for ever.3605

33 Now6258 therefore, I pray4994 you, let your servant5650 abide3427 instead8478 of the lad5288 a slave5650 to my lord;113 and let the lad5288 go5927 up with his brothers.251

34 For how349 shall I go5927 up to my father,1 and the lad5288 be not with me? lest6435 peradventure I see7200 the evil7451 that shall come4672 on my father.1

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

11 Then they speedily4116 took3381 down3381 every man376 his sack572 to the ground,776 and opened6605 every man376 his sack.572

12 And they searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

13 Then they rent7167 their clothes,8071 and laded6006 every man376 his ass,2543 and returned7725 to the city.5892

14 And Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house; for he was still there; and they fell before him on the ground.

14 And Judah3063 and his brothers251 came935 to Joseph's3130 house;1004 for he was yet5750 there:8033 and they fell5307 before6440 him on the ground.776

15 And Joseph said to them, What deed is this that you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly divine?

15 And Joseph3130 said559 to them, What4100 deed4639 is this2088 that you have done?6213 know3045 you not that such a man376 as I can certainly divine?5172

16 And Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 And he said to them, Far be it from me that I should do such a thing; only the man with whom the cup has been found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, go up in peace to your father.

17 And he said,559 God forbid2486 that I should do6213 so:2063 but the man376 in whose hand3027 the cup1375 is found,4672 he shall be my servant;5650 and as for you, get5927 you up in peace7965 to your father.1

18 Then Judah came near to him and said, I beg you, O my lord, let your servant speak a few words in my lord's presence, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have you a father, or a brother?

19 My lord113 asked7592 his servants,5650 saying,559 Have3426 you a father,1 or176 a brother?251

20 And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and he has a young son, the child of his old age; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

20 And we said559 to my lord,113 We have3426 a father,1 an old2205 man,376 and a child3206 of his old2208 age, a little6996 one; and his brother251 is dead,4191 and he alone905 is left3498 of his mother,517 and his father1 loves157 him.

21 Then you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him.

21 And you said559 to your servants,5650 Bring3381 him down3381 to me, that I may set7760 my eyes5869 on him.

22 And we said to my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

22 And we said559 to my lord,113 The lad5288 cannot3808 3201 leave5800 his father:1 for if he should leave5800 his father,1 his father would die.4191

23 And you said to your servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.

23 And you said559 to your servants,5650 Except518 3808 your youngest6996 brother251 come3381 down3381 with you, you shall see7200 my face6440 no3808 more.3254

24 And when we came up to your servant our father, we told him the words of my lord.

24 And it came1961 to pass when3588 we came5927 up to your servant5650 my father,1 we told5046 him the words1697 of my lord.113

25 And your servant our father said to us, Go back again and buy us a little grain.

25 And our father1 said,559 Go7725 again,7725 and buy7666 us a little4592 food.400

26 And we said to our father, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother goes down with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.

26 And we said,559 We cannot3808 3201 go3381 down:3381 if518 our youngest6996 brother251 be with us, then will we go3381 down:3381 for we may3201 not see7200 the man's376 face,6440 except369 our youngest6996 brother251 be with us.

27 Then your servant our father said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons;

27 And your servant5650 my father1 said559 to us, You know3045 that my wife802 bore3205 me two8147 sons:

28 And the one of them left me, and I said, Surely he has been killed; and I have never seen him since;

28 And the one259 went3318 out from me, and I said,559 Surely389 he is torn2963 in pieces; and I saw7200 him not since:2008

29 And now you want to take this one also from me, and if misfortune should befall him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

29 And if518 you take3947 this2088 also1571 from me, and mischief611 befall7136 him, you shall bring3381 down3381 my gray7872 hairs with sorrow7451 to the grave.7585

30 Now therefore when we come to your servant our father, and the lad is not with us; seeing that his life is dear to him like his own life;

30 Now6258 therefore when I come935 to your servant5650 my father,1 and the lad5288 be not with us; seeing that his life5315 is bound7194 up in the lad's5288 life;5315

31 It shall come to pass when he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die; and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.

31 It shall come1961 to pass, when he sees7200 that the lad5288 is not with us, that he will die:4191 and your servants5650 shall bring3381 down3381 the gray7872 hairs of your servant5650 our father1 with sorrow3015 to the grave.7585

32 For your servant became surety for the lad to our father, saying, If l do not bring him back to you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever.

32 For your servant5650 became6148 surety6148 for the lad5288 to my father,1 saying,559 If518 I bring935 him not to you, then I shall bear2398 the blame2398 to my father1 for ever.3605

33 Now therefore, let your servant stay here instead of the lad as a servant to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.

33 Now6258 therefore, I pray4994 you, let your servant5650 abide3427 instead8478 of the lad5288 a slave5650 to my lord;113 and let the lad5288 go5927 up with his brothers.251

34 For how can I go up to my father, if the lad is not with me? Lest I see the misfortune which will come on my father.

34 For how349 shall I go5927 up to my father,1 and the lad5288 be not with me? lest6435 peradventure I see7200 the evil7451 that shall come4672 on my father.1
