Chapter 44

1 And he commanded6680 853 the steward834 5921 of his house,1004 saying,559 Fill4390 853 the men's376 sacks572 with food,400 as much as834 they can3201 carry,5375 and put7760 every man's376 money3701 in his sack's572 mouth.6310

2 And put7760 my cup,1375 the silver3701 cup,1375 in the sack's572 mouth6310 of the youngest,6996 and his corn7668 money.3701 And he did6213 according to the word1697 that834 Joseph3130 had spoken.1696

3 As soon as the morning1242 was light,215 the men376 were sent away,7971 they1992 and their asses.2543

4 And when they1992 were gone out of3318 853 the city,5892 and not3808 yet far off,7368 Joseph3130 said559 unto his steward,834 5921 1004 Up,6965 follow7291 after310 the men;376 and when thou dost overtake5381 them, say559 unto413 them, Wherefore4100 have ye rewarded7999 evil7451 for8478 good?2896

5 Is not3808 this2088 it in which834 my lord113 drinketh,8354 and whereby indeed he divineth?1931 5172 5172 ye have done evil7489 in so834 doing.6213

6 And he overtook5381 them, and he spoke1696 unto413 them853 these same428 words.1697

7 And they said559 unto413 him, Wherefore4100 saith1696 my lord113 these428 words?1697 God forbid2486 that thy servants5650 should do4480 6213 according to this2088 thing: 1697

8 Behold,2005 the money,3701 which834 we found4672 in our sacks'572 mouths,6310 we brought again7725 unto413 thee out of the land4480 776 of Canaan:3667 how349 then should we steal1589 out of thy lord's house4480 1004 113 silver3701 or176 gold?2091

9 With854 whomsoever834 of thy servants4480 5650 it be found,4672 both let him die,4191 and we587 also1571 will be1961 my lord's113 bondmen.5650

10 And he said,559 Now6258 also1571 3651 let it1931 be according unto your words:1697 he with854 whom834 it is found4672 shall be1961 my servant;5650 and ye859 shall be1961 blameless.5355

11 Then they speedily4116 took down3381 every man376 853 his sack572 to the ground,776 and opened6605 every man376 his sack.572

12 And he searched,2664 and began2490 at the eldest,1419 and left3615 at the youngest:6996 and the cup1375 was found4672 in Benjamin's1144 sack.572

13 Then they rent7167 their clothes,8071 and laded6006 every man376 his ass,2543 and returned7725 to the city.5892

14 And Judah3063 and his brethren251 came935 to Joseph's3130 house;1004 for he1931 was yet5750 there:8033 and they fell5307 before6440 him on the ground.776

15 And Joseph3130 said559 unto them, What4100 deed4639 is this2088 that834 ye have done?6213 know3045 ye not3808 that3588 such a man376 as I3644 can certainly divine?5172 5172

16 And Judah3063 said,559 What4100 shall we say559 unto my lord?113 what4100 shall we speak?1696 or how4100 shall we clear ourselves?6663 God430 hath found out4672 853 the iniquity5771 of thy servants:5650 behold,2009 we are my lord's113 servants,5650 both1571 we,587 and he also1571 with whom834 3027 the cup1375 is found.4672

17 And he said,559 God forbid2486 that I should do4480 6213 so:2063 but the man376 in whose834 hand3027 the cup1375 is found,4672 he1931 shall be1961 my servant;5650 and as for you,859 get you up5927 in peace7965 unto413 your father.1

18 Then Judah3063 came near5066 unto him,413 and said,559 Oh994 my lord,113 let thy servant,5650 I pray thee,4994 speak1696 a word1697 in my lord's113 ears,241 and let not408 thine anger639 burn2734 against thy servant:5650 for3588 thou art even as3644 Pharaoh.6547

19 My lord113 asked7592 853 his servants,5650 saying,559 Have3426 ye a father,1 or176 a brother?251

20 And we said559 unto413 my lord,113 We have3426 a father,1 an old man,2205 and a child3206 of his old age,2208 a little one;6996 and his brother251 is dead,4191 and he1931 alone905 is left3498 of his mother,517 and his father1 loveth157 him.

21 And thou saidst559 unto413 thy servants,5650 Bring him down3381 unto413 me, that I may set7760 mine eyes5869 upon5921 him.

22 And we said559 unto413 my lord,113 The lad5288 cannot3808 3201 leave5800 853 his father:1 for if he should leave5800 853 his father,1 his father would die.4191

23 And thou saidst559 unto413 thy servants,5650 Except518 3808 your youngest6996 brother251 come down3381 with854 you, ye shall see7200 my face6440 no3808 more.3254

24 And it came to pass1961 when3588 we came up5927 unto413 thy servant5650 my father,1 we told5046 him853 the words1697 of my lord.113

25 And our father1 said,559 Go again,7725 and buy7666 us a little4592 food.400

26 And we said,559 We cannot3808 3201 go down:3381 if518 our youngest6996 brother251 be3426 with854 us, then will we go down:3381 for3588 we may3201 not3808 see7200 the man's376 face,6440 except369 our youngest6996 brother251 be with854 us.

27 And thy servant5650 my father1 said559 unto413 us, Ye859 know3045 that3588 my wife802 bore3205 me two8147 sons:

28 And the one259 went out3318 from4480 854 me, and I said,559 Surely389 he is torn in pieces;2963 2963 and I saw7200 him not3808 since:5704 2008

29 And if ye take3947 853 this2088 also1571 from4480 5973 me,6440 and mischief611 befall7136 him, ye shall bring down3381 853 my gray hairs7872 with sorrow7451 to the grave.7585

30 Now6258 therefore when I come935 to413 thy servant5650 my father,1 and the lad5288 be not369 with854 us; seeing that his life5315 is bound up7194 in the lad's life;5315

31 It shall come to pass,1961 when he seeth7200 that3588 the lad5288 is not369 with us, that he will die:4191 and thy servants5650 shall bring down3381 853 the gray hairs7872 of thy servant5650 our father1 with sorrow3015 to the grave.7585

32 For3588 thy servant5650 became surety6148 for853 the lad5288 unto4480 5973 my father,1 saying,559 If518 I bring935 him not3808 unto413 thee, then I shall bear the blame2398 to my father1 forever.3605 3117

33 Now6258 therefore, I pray thee,4994 let thy servant5650 abide3427 instead of8478 the lad5288 a bondman5650 to my lord;113 and let the lad5288 go up5927 with5973 his brethren.251

34 For3588 how349 shall I go up5927 to413 my father,1 and the lad5288 be not369 with854 me? lest peradventure6435 I see7200 the evil7451 that834 shall come on4672 853 my father.1

Chapter 44

1 AND he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with wheat, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth.

2 And take my cup, the silver cup, and put it in the sack's mouth of the youngest, with his money for the wheat. And the servant did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

3 As soon as the morning was light, the men started on their way, together with their asses.

4 And when they were gone out of the city, but not yet far off, Joseph said to the steward, Arise, pursue the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, Why have you returned evil for good?

5 This is the cup from which my lord drinks, and by which indeed he divines. You have done evil in so doing.

6 And he overtook them, and he spoke to them these same words.

7 They said to him, Let not our lord speak such words. Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing;

8 Behold, the money which we found in our sacks' mouths we brought back to you from the land of Canaan; how then should we steal from your master's house gold or silver?

9 With whomsoever of your servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be to our lord servants.

10 And he said to them, Now also let it be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and the rest of you shall be blameless.

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

12 And they searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

13 And they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his ass, and returned to the town.

14 And Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house; for he was still there; and they fell before him on the ground.

15 And Joseph said to them, What deed is this that you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly divine?

16 And Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 And he said to them, Far be it from me that I should do such a thing; only the man with whom the cup has been found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, go up in peace to your father.

18 Then Judah came near to him and said, I beg you, O my lord, let your servant speak a few words in my lord's presence, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have you a father, or a brother?

20 And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and he has a young son, the child of his old age; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

21 Then you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him.

22 And we said to my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

23 And you said to your servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.

24 And when we came up to your servant our father, we told him the words of my lord.

25 And your servant our father said to us, Go back again and buy us a little grain.

26 And we said to our father, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother goes down with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.

27 Then your servant our father said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons;

28 And the one of them left me, and I said, Surely he has been killed; and I have never seen him since;

29 And now you want to take this one also from me, and if misfortune should befall him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

30 Now therefore when we come to your servant our father, and the lad is not with us; seeing that his life is dear to him like his own life;

31 It shall come to pass when he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die; and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.

32 For your servant became surety for the lad to our father, saying, If l do not bring him back to you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever.

33 Now therefore, let your servant stay here instead of the lad as a servant to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.

34 For how can I go up to my father, if the lad is not with me? Lest I see the misfortune which will come on my father.

10 And he said,559 Now6258 also1571 3651 let it1931 be according unto your words:1697 he with854 whom834 it is found4672 shall be1961 my servant;5650 and ye859 shall be1961 blameless.5355

10 And he said to them, Now also let it be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and the rest of you shall be blameless.

11 Then they speedily4116 took down3381 every man376 853 his sack572 to the ground,776 and opened6605 every man376 his sack.572

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

12 And he searched,2664 and began2490 at the eldest,1419 and left3615 at the youngest:6996 and the cup1375 was found4672 in Benjamin's1144 sack.572

12 And they searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

13 Then they rent7167 their clothes,8071 and laded6006 every man376 his ass,2543 and returned7725 to the city.5892

13 And they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his ass, and returned to the town.

14 And Judah3063 and his brethren251 came935 to Joseph's3130 house;1004 for he1931 was yet5750 there:8033 and they fell5307 before6440 him on the ground.776

14 And Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house; for he was still there; and they fell before him on the ground.

15 And Joseph3130 said559 unto them, What4100 deed4639 is this2088 that834 ye have done?6213 know3045 ye not3808 that3588 such a man376 as I3644 can certainly divine?5172 5172

15 And Joseph said to them, What deed is this that you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly divine?

16 And Judah3063 said,559 What4100 shall we say559 unto my lord?113 what4100 shall we speak?1696 or how4100 shall we clear ourselves?6663 God430 hath found out4672 853 the iniquity5771 of thy servants:5650 behold,2009 we are my lord's113 servants,5650 both1571 we,587 and he also1571 with whom834 3027 the cup1375 is found.4672

16 And Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 And he said to them, Far be it from me that I should do such a thing; only the man with whom the cup has been found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, go up in peace to your father.

18 Then Judah came near to him and said, I beg you, O my lord, let your servant speak a few words in my lord's presence, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh.

19 My lord113 asked7592 853 his servants,5650 saying,559 Have3426 ye a father,1 or176 a brother?251

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have you a father, or a brother?

20 And we said559 unto413 my lord,113 We have3426 a father,1 an old man,2205 and a child3206 of his old age,2208 a little one;6996 and his brother251 is dead,4191 and he1931 alone905 is left3498 of his mother,517 and his father1 loveth157 him.

20 And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and he has a young son, the child of his old age; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

21 And thou saidst559 unto413 thy servants,5650 Bring him down3381 unto413 me, that I may set7760 mine eyes5869 upon5921 him.

21 Then you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him.

22 And we said559 unto413 my lord,113 The lad5288 cannot3808 3201 leave5800 853 his father:1 for if he should leave5800 853 his father,1 his father would die.4191

22 And we said to my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

23 And thou saidst559 unto413 thy servants,5650 Except518 3808 your youngest6996 brother251 come down3381 with854 you, ye shall see7200 my face6440 no3808 more.3254

23 And you said to your servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.

24 And it came to pass1961 when3588 we came up5927 unto413 thy servant5650 my father,1 we told5046 him853 the words1697 of my lord.113

24 And when we came up to your servant our father, we told him the words of my lord.

25 And our father1 said,559 Go again,7725 and buy7666 us a little4592 food.400

25 And your servant our father said to us, Go back again and buy us a little grain.

26 And we said to our father, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother goes down with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.

27 And thy servant5650 my father1 said559 unto413 us, Ye859 know3045 that3588 my wife802 bore3205 me two8147 sons:

27 Then your servant our father said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons;

28 And the one259 went out3318 from4480 854 me, and I said,559 Surely389 he is torn in pieces;2963 2963 and I saw7200 him not3808 since:5704 2008

28 And the one of them left me, and I said, Surely he has been killed; and I have never seen him since;

29 And if ye take3947 853 this2088 also1571 from4480 5973 me,6440 and mischief611 befall7136 him, ye shall bring down3381 853 my gray hairs7872 with sorrow7451 to the grave.7585

29 And now you want to take this one also from me, and if misfortune should befall him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

30 Now6258 therefore when I come935 to413 thy servant5650 my father,1 and the lad5288 be not369 with854 us; seeing that his life5315 is bound up7194 in the lad's life;5315

30 Now therefore when we come to your servant our father, and the lad is not with us; seeing that his life is dear to him like his own life;

31 It shall come to pass when he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die; and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.

32 For3588 thy servant5650 became surety6148 for853 the lad5288 unto4480 5973 my father,1 saying,559 If518 I bring935 him not3808 unto413 thee, then I shall bear the blame2398 to my father1 forever.3605 3117

32 For your servant became surety for the lad to our father, saying, If l do not bring him back to you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever.

33 Now6258 therefore, I pray thee,4994 let thy servant5650 abide3427 instead of8478 the lad5288 a bondman5650 to my lord;113 and let the lad5288 go up5927 with5973 his brethren.251

33 Now therefore, let your servant stay here instead of the lad as a servant to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.

34 For3588 how349 shall I go up5927 to413 my father,1 and the lad5288 be not369 with854 me? lest peradventure6435 I see7200 the evil7451 that834 shall come on4672 853 my father.1

34 For how can I go up to my father, if the lad is not with me? Lest I see the misfortune which will come on my father.
