Chapter 11

1 I say2046 then,3767 Has God2316 cast683 away683 his people?2992 God3361 1096 forbid.3361 1096 For I also2532 am1510 an Israelite,2475 of the seed4690 of Abraham,11 of the tribe5443 of Benjamin.958

2 God2316 has not cast683 away683 his people2992 which3739 he foreknew.4267 Know1492 you not what5101 the scripture1124 said3004 of Elias?2243 how5613 he makes1793 intercession1793 to God2316 against2596 Israel 2474saying,3004

3 Lord,2962 they have killed615 your prophets,4396 and dig2679 down2679 your4675 altars;2379 and I am left5275 alone,3441 and they seek2212 my life.5590

4 But what5101 said3004 the answer5538 of God to him? I have reserved2641 to myself1683 seven2035 thousand2035 men,435 who3748 have not bowed2578 the knee1119 to the image of Baal.896

5 Even2532 so3779 then3767 at1722 this3588 present3568 time2540 also2532 there is a remnant3005 according2596 to the election1589 of grace.5485

6 And if1487 by grace,5485 then is it no3765 more2089 of works:2041 otherwise1893 grace5485 is no3765 more2089 grace.5485 But if1487 it be of works,2041 then it is no3765 more2089 grace:5485 otherwise1893 work2041 is no3765 more2089 work.2041

7 What5101 then?3767 Israel2474 has not obtained2013 that which3739 he seeks1934 for; but the election1589 has obtained2013 it, and the rest3062 were blinded.4456

8 (According2531 as it is written,1125 God2316 has given1325 them the spirit4151 of slumber,2659 eyes3788 that they should not see,991 and ears3775 that they should not hear;191) to this4594 day.2250

9 And David1138 said,3004 Let their table5132 be made1096 a snare,3803 and a trap,2339 and a stumbling block,4625 and a recompense468 to them:

10 Let their eyes3788 be darkened,4654 that they may not see,991 and bow4781 down4781 their back3577 always.1275

11 I say2046 then,3767 Have they stumbled4417 that they should fall?4098 God3361 1096 forbid:3361 1096 but rather through their fall3900 salvation4991 is come to the Gentiles,1484 for to provoke3863 them to jealousy.

12 Now1161 if1487 the fall3900 of them be the riches4149 of the world,2889 and the diminishing2275 of them the riches4149 of the Gentiles;1484 how4214 much4214 more3123 their fullness?4138

13 For I speak3004 to you Gentiles,1484 inasmuch1909 3745 as I am1510 the apostle652 of the Gentiles,1484 I magnify1392 my3450 office:1248

14 If1513 by any4458 means4458 I may provoke3863 to emulation3863 them which are my flesh,4561 and might save4982 some5100 of them.

15 For if1487 the casting580 away580 of them be the reconciling2643 of the world,2889 what5101 shall the receiving4356 of them be, but life2222 from the dead?3498

16 For if1487 the first fruit536 be holy,40 the lump5445 is also2532 holy:40 and if1487 the root4491 be holy,40 so2532 are the branches.2798

17 And if1487 some5100 of the branches2798 be broken1575 off,1575 and you, being5607 a wild65 olive65 tree,65 were grafted1461 in among1722 them, and with them partake1096 4791 of the root4491 and fatness4096 of the olive1636 tree;

18 Boast2620 not against2620 the branches.2798 But if1487 you boast, you bore941 not the root,4491 but the root4491 you.

19 You will say2046 then,3767 The branches2798 were broken1575 off,1575 that I might be grafted1461 in.

20 Well;2573 because of unbelief570 they were broken1575 off,1575 and you stand2476 by faith.4102 Be not high minded,5309 but fear:5399

21 For if1487 God2316 spared5339 not the natural2596 5449 branches,2798 take heed3708 lest3381 he also3761 spare5339 not you.

22 Behold1492 therefore3767 the goodness5544 and severity663 of God:2316 on1909 them which fell,4098 severity;663 but toward1909 you, goodness,5544 if1437 you continue1961 in his goodness:5544 otherwise1893 you also2532 shall be cut1581 off.1581

23 And they also,1161 if1437 they abide1961 not still in unbelief,570 shall be grafted1461 in: for God2316 is able1415 to graft1461 them in again.3825

24 For if1487 you were cut1581 out of the olive65 tree65 which is wild65 by nature,5449 and were grafted1461 contrary3844 to nature5449 into1519 a good2565 olive2565 tree:2565 how4214 much4214 more3123 shall these,3778 which be the natural2596 5449 branches,2798 be grafted1461 into their own2398 olive1636 tree?

25 For I would2309 not, brothers,80 that you should be ignorant50 of this5124 mystery,3466 lest2443 3361 you should be wise5429 in your3844 1438 own1438 conceits;3844 1438 that blindness4457 in part3313 is happened1096 to Israel,2474 until891 the fullness4138 of the Gentiles1484 be come1525 in.

26 And so3779 all3956 Israel2474 shall be saved:4982 as it is written,1125 There shall come2240 out of Sion4622 the Deliverer,4506 and shall turn654 away654 ungodliness763 from Jacob:2384

27 For this3778 is my covenant1242 to them, when3752 I shall take851 away851 their sins.266

28 As concerning2596 the gospel,2098 they are enemies2190 for your5209 sakes: but as touching2596 the election,1589 they are beloved27 for the father's3962 sakes.

29 For the gifts5486 and calling2821 of God2316 are without278 repentance.278

30 For as you in times4218 past have not believed544 God,2316 yet have now3568 obtained1653 mercy1653 through their unbelief:543

31 Even so3779 have these3778 also2532 now3568 not believed,544 that through your5212 mercy1656 they also2532 may obtain1653 mercy.1653

32 For God2316 has concluded4788 them all3956 in unbelief,543 that he might have mercy1653 on all.3956

33 O the depth899 of the riches4149 both2532 of the wisdom4678 and knowledge1108 of God!2316 how5613 unsearchable419 are his judgments,2917 and his ways3598 past421 finding421 out!

34 For who5101 has known1097 the mind3563 of the Lord?2962 or2228 who5101 has been1096 his counselor?4825

35 Or2228 who5101 has first4272 given4272 to him, and it shall be recompensed467 to him again?467

36 For of him, and through1223 him, and to him, are all3956 things: to whom846 be glory1391 for ever.165 Amen.281

Chapter 11

1 I SAY, then, has God rejected his people? Far be it. For I also am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

2 God has not rejected his people which he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah? How he complained to God against Israel, saying,

3 My LORD, they have killed your prophets and have demolished your altars; and I am left alone; and they seek my life.

4 And it was said to him in a vision: Behold I have reserved for myself seven thousand men, who have not knelt on their knees to worship Baal.

5 Even so at the present time a remnant is preserved, elected by the grace.

6 And if by grace, then it is not by works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if by works, then it is not by grace: otherwise work is no more work.

7 What then? Israel has not obtained that which he sought; but the elected ones have obtained it, and the rest were blinded in their hearts.

8 As it is written, God has given them a stubborn spirit, eyes that cannot see, and ears that cannot hear, to this very day.

9 And David said, Let their table become a snare, and a trap and a stumblingblock, and a recompense unto them.

10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and let their backs be bowed down always.

11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? Far be it. But rather by their stumbling salvation has come to the Gentiles, in order to make them zealous.

12 Now if their stumbling has resulted in riches to the world, and their condemnation in riches to the Gentiles; how much more is their restoration?

13 It is to you Gentiles that I speak, inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, and perhaps magnify my ministry:

14 But if I am able to make those who are my flesh zealous, I may thus save some of them.

15 And if their rejection has resulted in reconciliation of the world, how much more will their restoration be? Indeed it will be life from the dead.

16 For if the first fruit is holy, the rest of the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

17 And if some of the branches were cut off, and you who are a branch of a wild olive tree have been grafted in their place, and you have become a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

18 Do not boast over the branches. For if you boast, it is not you who sustains the root, but the root sustains you.

19 Perhaps you may say, The branches were cut off that I might be grafted in their place.

20 Well; they were cut off because of their unbelief, but you exist by faith. Be not highminded, but fear God.

21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, it may well be he will not spare you.

22 Consider therefore the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but on you, goodness, if you continue in his goodness: otherwise you also will be cut off.

23 And even they, if they do not abide in their unbelief, will be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.

24 For if you who have been cut from the wild olive tree, which is natural to you, and grafted contrary to your nature to become a good olive tree: how much more fruitful would they be, if they were grafted into their natural olive tree?

25 I am desirous, my brethren, that you should know this mystery, so that you may not be wise in your own conceits; for blindness of heart has to some degree befallen Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles shall come in.

26 And then all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, A deliverer shall come out of Zion, and he shall remove ungodliness from Jacob:

27 And then they shall have the same covenant from me, when I have forgiven their sins.

28 Now according to the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But according to election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.

29 For God does not withdraw his gift and his call.

30 Just as you were formerly disobedient to God and have now obtained mercy because of their disobedience,

31 Likewise, they are also disobedient now to the mercy which is upon you, that there may be mercy upon them also.

32 For God has included all men in disobedience, that he might have mercy on every man.

33 O the depth of the riches, the wisdom, and the knowledge of God! for no man has searched his judgment, and his ways are inscrutable.

34 For who has known the mind of the LORD? or who has been his counsellor?

35 Or who has first given to him and then received from him?

36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to him be glory and blessing, for ever and ever. Amen.
