Chapter 3

1 Behold,1492 what manner4217 of love26 the3588 Father3962 hath bestowed1325 upon us,2254 that2443 we should be called2564 the sons5043 of God:2316 therefore1223 5124 the3588 world2889 knoweth1097 us2248 not,3756 because3754 it knew1097 him846 not.3756

2 Beloved,27 now3568 are2070 we the sons5043 of God,2316 and2532 it doth not yet3768 appear5319 what5101 we shall be:2071 but1161 we know1492 that,3754 when1437 he shall appear,5319 we shall be2071 like3664 him;846 for3754 we shall see3700 him846 as2531 he is.2076

3 And2532 every man3956 that hath2192 this5026 hope1680 in1909 him846 purifieth48 himself,1438 even as2531 he1565 is2076 pure.53

4 Whosoever3956 committeth4160 sin266 transgresseth also the law:4160 2532 458 for2532 sin266 is2076 the3588 transgression of the law.458

8 He that committeth4160 sin266 is2076 of1537 the3588 devil;1228 for3754 the3588 devil1228 sinneth264 from575 the beginning.746 For1519 this purpose5124 the3588 Son5207 of God2316 was manifested,5319 that2443 he might destroy3089 the3588 works2041 of the3588 devil.1228

9 Whosoever3956 is born1080 of1537 God2316 doth not3756 commit4160 sin;266 for3754 his848 seed4690 remaineth3306 in1722 him:846 and2532 he cannot1410 3756 sin,264 because3754 he is born1080 of1537 God.2316

10 In1722 this5129 the3588 children5043 of God2316 are2076 manifest,5318 and2532 the3588 children5043 of the3588 devil:1228 whosoever3956 doeth4160 not3361 righteousness1343 is2076 not3756 of1537 God,2316 neither2532 he that loveth25 not3361 his848 brother.80

11 For3754 this3778 is2076 the3588 message31 that3739 ye heard191 from575 the beginning,746 that2443 we should love25 one another.240

12 Not3756 as2531 Cain,2535 who was2258 of1537 that wicked one,4190 and2532 slew4969 his848 brother.80 And2532 wherefore5484 5101 slew4969 he him?846 Because3754 his own848 works2041 were2258 evil,4190 and1161 his848 brother's80 righteous.1342

13 Marvel2296 not,3361 my3450 brethren,80 if1487 the3588 world2889 hate3404 you.5209

14 We2249 know1492 that3754 we have passed3327 from1537 death2288 unto1519 life,2222 because3754 we love25 the3588 brethren.80 He that loveth25 not3361 his brother80 abideth3306 in1722 death.2288

15 Whosoever3956 hateth3404 his848 brother80 is2076 a murderer:443 and2532 ye know1492 that3754 no3956 3756 murderer443 hath2192 eternal166 life2222 abiding3306 in1722 him.846

16 Hereby1722 5129 perceive1097 we the3588 love26 of God,2316 because3754 he1565 laid down5087 his848 life5590 for5228 us:2257 and2532 we2249 ought3784 to lay down5087 our lives5590 for5228 the3588 brethren.80

17 But1161 whoso3739 302 hath2192 this world's2889 good,979 and2532 seeth2334 his848 brother80 have2192 need,5532 and2532 shutteth up2808 his848 bowels4698 of compassion from575 him,846 how4459 dwelleth3306 the3588 love26 of God2316 in1722 him?846

18 My3450 little children,5040 let us not3361 love25 in word,3056 neither3366 in tongue;1100 but235 in deed2041 and2532 in truth.225

19 And2532 hereby1722 5129 we know1097 that3754 we are2070 of1537 the3588 truth,225 and2532 shall assure3982 our2257 hearts2588 before1715 him.846

20 For3754 if1437 our2257 heart2588 condemn2607 us,3754 God2316 is2076 greater3187 than our2257 heart,2588 and2532 knoweth1097 all things.3956

21 Beloved,27 if1437 our2257 heart2588 condemn2607 us2257 not,3361 then have2192 we confidence3954 toward4314 God.2316

22 And2532 whatsoever3739 1437 we ask,154 we receive2983 of3844 him,846 because3754 we keep5083 his848 commandments,1785 and2532 do4160 those things that are pleasing701 in his sight.1799 846

23 And2532 this3778 is2076 his848 commandment,1785 That2443 we should believe4100 on the3588 name3686 of his848 Son5207 Jesus2424 Christ,5547 and2532 love25 one another,240 as2531 he gave1325 us2254 commandment.1785

Chapter 3

1 SEE how abundant the love of the Fa ther is toward us, for he has called us sons and made us: therefore the world does not know us because it did not know him.

2 My beloved, now we are the sons of God, and as yet it has not been revealed what we shall be: but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be in his likeness; for we shall see him as he is.

3 Let every man who has this hope in him purify himself, even as he is pure.

4 Whoever commits sin commits evil: for all sin is evil.

5 And you know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

6 Whoever abides in him does not sin: and whoever sins has not seen him, neither known him.

7 My children, let no man deceive you; he who does righteousness is righteous, just as Christ is righteous.

8 He who commits sin is of the devil; because the devil has been a sinner from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

9 Whoever is born of God does not commit sin because God's seed is in him; and he cannot sin because he is born of God.

10 In this the children of God can be distinguished from the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness and does not love his brother, does not belong to God.

11 For this is the commandment that you have heard from the beginning, that you must love one another,

12 Not as Cain, who belonged to the wicked one and slew his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were evil, and those of his brother were righteous.

13 So be not surprised, my brethren, if the world hates you.

14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death.

15 Whosoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

16 By this we know his love for us, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for our brethren.

17 Whoever has worldly goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts his mercy from him, how can the love of God dwell in him?

18 My children, let us not love one another in word and in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

19 And by this we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before he comes.

20 For if our hearts condemns us, how much more, then, will God who is greater than our hearts and knows all things.

21 My beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, then we have confidence before God.

22 And whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing to him.

23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he has commanded us.

24 Whosoever keeps his commandments will be guarded by him, and he will dwell in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given us.
