Chapter 38

1 And it came1961 to pass at that time,6256 that Judah3063 went3381 down3381 from his brothers,251 and turned5186 in to a certain376 Adullamite,5726 whose name8034 was Hirah.2437

2 And Judah3063 saw7200 there8033 a daughter1323 of a certain376 Canaanite,3669 whose name8034 was Shuah;7770 and he took3947 her, and went935 in to her.

3 And she conceived,2029 and bore3205 a son;1121 and he called7121 his name8034 Er.6147

4 And she conceived2029 again,5750 and bore3205 a son;1121 and she called7121 his name8034 Onan.209

5 And she yet5750 again5750 conceived,3254 and bore3205 a son;1121 and called7121 his name8034 Shelah:7956 and he was at Chezib,3580 when she bore3205 him.

6 And Judah3063 took3947 a wife802 for Er6147 his firstborn,1060 whose name8034 was Tamar.8559

7 And Er,6147 Judah's3063 firstborn,1060 was wicked7451 in the sight5869 of the LORD;3068 and the LORD3068 slew4191 him.

8 And Judah3063 said559 to Onan,209 Go935 in to your brother's251 wife,802 and marry2992 her, and raise6965 up seed2233 to your brother.251

9 And Onan209 knew3045 that the seed2233 should not be his; and it came1961 to pass, when518 he went935 in to his brother's251 wife,802 that he spilled7843 it on the ground,776 lest1115 that he should give5414 seed2233 to his brother.251

10 And the thing which834 he did6213 displeased7489 5869 the LORD:3068 why he slew4191 him also.1571

11 Then said559 Judah3063 to Tamar8559 his daughter3618 in law,3618 Remain3427 a widow490 at your father's1 house,1004 till5704 Shelah7956 my son1121 be grown:1431 for he said,559 Lest6435 peradventure he die4191 also,1571 as his brothers251 did. And Tamar8559 went3212 and dwelled3427 in her father's1 house.1004

12 And in process7235 of time3117 the daughter1323 of Shuah7770 Judah's3063 wife802 died;4191 and Judah3063 was comforted,5162 and went5927 up to his sheep shearers1494 6629 to Timnath,8553 he and his friend7453 Hirah2437 the Adullamite.5726

13 And it was told5046 Tamar,8559 saying,559 Behold2009 your father2524 in law2524 goes5927 up to Timnath8553 to shear1494 his sheep.6629

14 And she put5493 her widow's491 garments899 off5921 from her, and covered3680 her with a veil,6809 and wrapped5968 herself, and sat3427 in an open5869 place,6607 which834 is by the way1870 to Timnath;8553 for she saw7200 that Shelah7956 was grown,1431 and she was not given5414 to him to wife.802

15 When Judah3063 saw7200 her, he thought2803 her to be an harlot;2181 because3588 she had covered3680 her face.6440

16 And he turned5186 to her by the way,1870 and said,559 Go3051 to, I pray4994 you, let me come935 in to you; (for he knew3045 not that she was his daughter3618 in law.3618) And she said,559 What4100 will you give5414 me, that you may come935 in to me?

17 And he said,559 I will send7971 you a kid1423 from the flock.6629 And she said,559 Will you give5414 me a pledge,6162 till5704 you send7971 it?

18 And he said,559 What834 pledge6162 shall I give5414 you? And she said,559 Your signet,2368 and your bracelets,6616 and your staff4294 that is in your hand.3027 And he gave5414 it her, and came935 in to her, and she conceived2029 by him.

19 And she arose,6965 and went3212 away, and laid5493 by her veil6809 from her, and put3847 on the garments899 of her widowhood.491

20 And Judah3063 sent7971 the kid1423 by the hand3027 of his friend7453 the Adullamite,5726 to receive3947 his pledge6162 from the woman's802 hand:3027 but he found4672 her not.

21 Then he asked7592 the men582 of that place,4725 saying,559 Where346 is the harlot,6948 that was openly5879 by the way1870 side? And they said,559 There was no3808 harlot6948 in this2088 place.

22 And he returned7725 to Judah,3063 and said,559 I cannot3808 find4672 her; and also1571 the men582 of the place4725 said,559 that there was no3808 harlot6948 in this2088 place.

23 And Judah3063 said,559 Let her take3947 it to her, lest6435 we be shamed:937 behold,2009 I sent7971 this2088 kid,1423 and you have not found4672 her.

24 And it came1961 to pass about three7969 months2320 after, that it was told5046 Judah,3063 saying,559 Tamar8559 your daughter3618 in law3618 has played the harlot;2181 and also,1571 behold,2009 she is with child2030 by prostitution.2183 And Judah3063 said,559 Bring3318 her forth,3318 and let her be burnt.8313

25 When she was brought3318 forth,3318 she sent7971 to her father2524 in law,2524 saying,559 By the man,376 whose834 these428 are, am I with child:2030 and she said,559 Discern,5234 I pray4994 you, whose834 are these,428 the signet,2858 and bracelets,6616 and staff.4294

26 And Judah3063 acknowledged5234 them, and said,559 She has been more righteous6663 than I; because3588 that I gave5414 her not to Shelah7956 my son.1121 And he knew3045 her again3254 no3808 more.5750

27 And it came1961 to pass in the time6256 of her travail,3205 that, behold,2009 twins8380 were in her womb.990

28 And it came1961 to pass, when she travailed,3205 that the one put5414 out his hand:3027 and the midwife3205 took3947 and bound7194 on his hand3027 a scarlet8144 thread, saying,559 This2088 came3318 out first.7223

29 And it came1961 to pass, as he drew7725 back7725 his hand,3027 that, behold,2009 his brother251 came3318 out: and she said,559 How4100 have you broken6555 forth?6556 this breach6556 be on you: therefore his name8034 was called7121 Pharez.6557

30 And afterward310 came3318 out his brother,251 that had the scarlet8144 thread on his hand:3027 and his name8034 was called7121 Zarah.2226

20 Тем временем Иуда послал через своего друга, адулламитянина, козлёнка, чтобы получить назад залог у той женщины, но друг не нашёл её.

21 Он спросил у местных жителей: – Где та храмовая блудница, . которая сидела у дороги в Енаим?Они ответили: – Здесь не было никакой храмовой блудницы.

22 Он вернулся к Иуде и сказал: – Я не нашёл её, и жители того места сказали: «Здесь нет никакой храмовой блудницы».

23 Иуда сказал: – Пусть оставит себе то, что взяла, иначе мы станем посмешищем. Я ведь посылал ей козлёнка, но ты её не нашёл.

24 Месяца три спустя Иуде сказали: – Твоя невестка Фамарь впала в блуд и от этого забеременела. Иуда сказал: – Выведите её, и пусть она будет сожжена!

25 Но когда её уводили, она послала к свёкру с такими словами: – Я беременна от человека, которому принадлежат эти вещи. Ещё она сказала: – Посмотри, не узнаёшь, чьи это печать, шнур и посох?

26 Иуда узнал их и сказал: – Она правее, чем я, потому что я не отдал её за моего сына Шелу. И он больше не ложился с ней.

27 Когда пришло ей время рожать, в утробе у неё оказались мальчики-близнецы.

28 Когда она уже рожала, один из них высунул руку; тогда женщина, принимавшая роды взяла алую нить, обвязала ему запястье и сказала: – Этот вышел первым.

29 Но он втянул руку обратно, и вышел его брат; тогда она сказала: – Как это ты прорвался?И его назвали Фарец («прорыв»).

30 Затем вышел и тот, у которого на запястье была алая нить, и ему дали имя Зерах («алый свет зари»).
