Глава 1

1 Это произошло во времена Ксеркса – того самого Ксеркса, который правил ста двадцатью семью провинциями, простирающимися от Индии до самой Эфиопии.

2 В те времена престол царя Ксеркса находился в крепости города Сузы.

3 На третий год царствования он устроил пир для всех своих сановников и знати. Там были военачальники Персии и Мидии, знатные люди и наместники провинций.

4 Целых сто восемьдесят дней показывал он великое богатство своего царства, блеск и славу своего величия.

5 Когда эти дни минули, царь устроил для всех, от малого до великого, кто только был в крепости Сузы, семидневный пир в закрытом саду царского дворца.

6 Сад был украшен завесами из белого и голубого льна, прикреплёнными белыми льняными и пурпурными шнурами к серебряным кольцам на мраморных столбах. Золотые и серебряные ложа стояли на помосте, выстланном порфиром, мрамором, перламутром и другими дорогими камнями.

7 Вино подавалось в золотых кубках, среди которых не было двух одинаковых, и царского вина было по щедрости царя в изобилии.

8 По царскому повелению каждый гость мог пить столько, сколько хотел, потому что царь приказал своим слугам наливать всем, кто пожелает.

9 Царица Астинь тоже устроила пир для женщин во дворце царя Ксеркса.

10 На седьмой день, когда царь Ксеркс был весел от вина, он приказал семи евнухам, которые служили ему, – Мехуману, Бизте, Харбоне, Бигте, Авагте, Зетару и Каркасу –

11 привести к нему царицу Астинь в её царской короне, чтобы показать её красоту народу и сановникам, ведь облик её был прекрасен.

12 Но царица Астинь отказалась прийти по приказу царя, переданному через евнухов. Тогда царь пришёл в ярость и воспылал гневом.

13 Он стал советоваться с мудрецами, знающими законы (потому что в обычае у царя было советоваться со всеми, кто был сведущ в законах и обычаях,

14 а ближайшими к нему были Каршена, Шетар, Адмата, Фарсис, Мерес, Марсена и Мемухан – семеро сановников Персии и Мидии, у которых был особый доступ к царю и которые стояли выше всех в царстве):

15 – Как по закону следует поступить с царицей Астинь, раз она не исполнила повеление царя Ксеркса, переданное ей через евнухов?

16 Мемухан сказал царю и сановникам: – Царица Астинь виновна не только перед царём, но и перед всеми его сановниками и народами всех провинций царя Ксеркса.

17 Теперь о поступке царицы узнают все женщины и начнут презирать своих мужей, говоря: «Царь Ксеркс повелел привести к нему царицу Астинь, а она не пришла».

18 Сегодня же знатные женщины Персии и Мидии, услышав о поступке царицы, взбунтуются против своих мужей, и тогда презрению жён и гневу мужей не будет конца!

19 Поэтому, если угодно царю, пусть он издаст указ, что Астинь никогда больше не войдёт к царю Ксерксу. Пусть это будет занесено в законы Персии и Мидии, которые не отменяются. И пусть царь отдаст её царский сан другой, которая будет лучше неё.

20 И когда царский указ будет провозглашён по всему огромному царству, все женщины будут чтить своих мужей, от малого до великого.

21 Этот совет понравился царю и его сановникам, и царь сделал так, как предлагал Мемухан.

22 Он отправил послания во все части царства, в каждую провинцию её письменами и каждому народу на его языке, что каждый мужчина должен быть господином в своём доме. Об этом объявили на всех языках.

Chapter 1

1 NOW it came to pass in the days of Akhshirash, who reigned from India even to Ethiopia, over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces,

2 In the days when King Akhshirash sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,

3 In the third year of his reign, he made a great feast for all his princes and his servants, the mighty men of Persia and Media and the king's nobles and the governors of the provinces being before him.

4 Then he showed them the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty many days, even a hundred and eighty days.

5 And when these days were completed, the king made a feast to all the people who were present in Shushan the palace, both great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;

6 There were curtains of white cotton and wool, and hangings of violet, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble; the couches were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of marble, and the carpets were of fine white linen and silk.

7 And they gave the guests drink in vessels of gold (the vessels being different one from another), and royal wine was in abundance, according to the generosity of the king.

8 And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel; for so the king had commanded to all the stewards of his household, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.

9 Also Vashti the queen made a great feast for all the women in the royal house which belonged to King Akhshirash.

10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded the eunuchs, Biztha, Rahbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Terash, Zethar, and Carcash, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of Akhshirash the king,

11 To bring Vashti the queen be fore the king with the royal crown, to show the people and the princes her beauty; for she was fair to look upon.

12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command by the eunuchs; therefore the king was very wroth and his anger burned in him.

13 Then the king spoke to the wise men who knew the times (for this was the king's custom, he discussed matters in the presence of all who knew law and judgment).

14 And those who were next to him were Barnashi, Shetar, Armoth, Remos, Tarshish, Mesriah, Meaucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media who sat in the presence of the king and were seen before him at the gate of the royal palace.

15 And he said, What shall we do to Queen Vashti, according to law, because she has not performed the command of King Akhshirash by the eunuchs?

16 And Meaucan said before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen has not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of King Akhshirash.

17 For this deed of the queen shall reach all women, so that their husbands shall be despised in their eyes, and they shall say, King Akhshirash commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she did not come.

18 Even this very day the princes of Persia and Media who have heard of the deed of the queen shall tell it to all the king's princes. Thus there shall be much contempt and wrath.

19 If it please the king, let there go forth a royal decree from him, and let it be written among the laws of Media and Persia, that it may not be altered, that Vashti the queen is to come no more before King Akhshirash; and let the king give her royal estate to another who is better than she.

20 And the king's decree shall be proclaimed and published throughout all his empire (for it is great), that all wives shall give honor to their husbands, both great and small.

21 And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Meaucan;

22 And he sent letters to all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof and to every people according to its own language, that every man should bear rule in his own house and that it should be published according to the language of every people.

1 NOW it came to pass in the days of Akhshirash, who reigned from India even to Ethiopia, over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces,

2 В те времена престол царя Ксеркса находился в крепости города Сузы.

2 In the days when King Akhshirash sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,

3 На третий год царствования он устроил пир для всех своих сановников и знати. Там были военачальники Персии и Мидии, знатные люди и наместники провинций.

3 In the third year of his reign, he made a great feast for all his princes and his servants, the mighty men of Persia and Media and the king's nobles and the governors of the provinces being before him.

4 Целых сто восемьдесят дней показывал он великое богатство своего царства, блеск и славу своего величия.

4 Then he showed them the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty many days, even a hundred and eighty days.

5 Когда эти дни минули, царь устроил для всех, от малого до великого, кто только был в крепости Сузы, семидневный пир в закрытом саду царского дворца.

5 And when these days were completed, the king made a feast to all the people who were present in Shushan the palace, both great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;

6 Сад был украшен завесами из белого и голубого льна, прикреплёнными белыми льняными и пурпурными шнурами к серебряным кольцам на мраморных столбах. Золотые и серебряные ложа стояли на помосте, выстланном порфиром, мрамором, перламутром и другими дорогими камнями.

6 There were curtains of white cotton and wool, and hangings of violet, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble; the couches were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of marble, and the carpets were of fine white linen and silk.

7 Вино подавалось в золотых кубках, среди которых не было двух одинаковых, и царского вина было по щедрости царя в изобилии.

7 And they gave the guests drink in vessels of gold (the vessels being different one from another), and royal wine was in abundance, according to the generosity of the king.

8 По царскому повелению каждый гость мог пить столько, сколько хотел, потому что царь приказал своим слугам наливать всем, кто пожелает.

11 привести к нему царицу Астинь в её царской короне, чтобы показать её красоту народу и сановникам, ведь облик её был прекрасен.

11 To bring Vashti the queen be fore the king with the royal crown, to show the people and the princes her beauty; for she was fair to look upon.

12 Но царица Астинь отказалась прийти по приказу царя, переданному через евнухов. Тогда царь пришёл в ярость и воспылал гневом.

12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command by the eunuchs; therefore the king was very wroth and his anger burned in him.

13 Он стал советоваться с мудрецами, знающими законы (потому что в обычае у царя было советоваться со всеми, кто был сведущ в законах и обычаях,

13 Then the king spoke to the wise men who knew the times (for this was the king's custom, he discussed matters in the presence of all who knew law and judgment).

14 а ближайшими к нему были Каршена, Шетар, Адмата, Фарсис, Мерес, Марсена и Мемухан – семеро сановников Персии и Мидии, у которых был особый доступ к царю и которые стояли выше всех в царстве):

14 And those who were next to him were Barnashi, Shetar, Armoth, Remos, Tarshish, Mesriah, Meaucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media who sat in the presence of the king and were seen before him at the gate of the royal palace.

15 – Как по закону следует поступить с царицей Астинь, раз она не исполнила повеление царя Ксеркса, переданное ей через евнухов?

15 And he said, What shall we do to Queen Vashti, according to law, because she has not performed the command of King Akhshirash by the eunuchs?

16 Мемухан сказал царю и сановникам: – Царица Астинь виновна не только перед царём, но и перед всеми его сановниками и народами всех провинций царя Ксеркса.

16 And Meaucan said before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen has not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of King Akhshirash.

17 Теперь о поступке царицы узнают все женщины и начнут презирать своих мужей, говоря: «Царь Ксеркс повелел привести к нему царицу Астинь, а она не пришла».

17 For this deed of the queen shall reach all women, so that their husbands shall be despised in their eyes, and they shall say, King Akhshirash commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she did not come.

18 Сегодня же знатные женщины Персии и Мидии, услышав о поступке царицы, взбунтуются против своих мужей, и тогда презрению жён и гневу мужей не будет конца!

18 Even this very day the princes of Persia and Media who have heard of the deed of the queen shall tell it to all the king's princes. Thus there shall be much contempt and wrath.

19 Поэтому, если угодно царю, пусть он издаст указ, что Астинь никогда больше не войдёт к царю Ксерксу. Пусть это будет занесено в законы Персии и Мидии, которые не отменяются. И пусть царь отдаст её царский сан другой, которая будет лучше неё.

19 If it please the king, let there go forth a royal decree from him, and let it be written among the laws of Media and Persia, that it may not be altered, that Vashti the queen is to come no more before King Akhshirash; and let the king give her royal estate to another who is better than she.

20 И когда царский указ будет провозглашён по всему огромному царству, все женщины будут чтить своих мужей, от малого до великого.

20 And the king's decree shall be proclaimed and published throughout all his empire (for it is great), that all wives shall give honor to their husbands, both great and small.

21 Этот совет понравился царю и его сановникам, и царь сделал так, как предлагал Мемухан.

21 And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Meaucan;

22 Он отправил послания во все части царства, в каждую провинцию её письменами и каждому народу на его языке, что каждый мужчина должен быть господином в своём доме. Об этом объявили на всех языках.

22 And he sent letters to all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof and to every people according to its own language, that every man should bear rule in his own house and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
